Mike Yastrzemski News
San Francisco Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski is back from paternity leave on Monday but isn't in the starting lineup against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Yastrzemski was doing early hitting on the field with the team on Monday. Before going on paternity leave, the 33-year-old went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Opening Day last Thursday in the loss to the San Diego Padres. Yaz has had trouble staying healthy in the big leagues and is a strict platoon outfielder due to his struggles against lefties. He also hasn't hit for a very high average the last couple years, which really limits his fantasy appeal to NL-only leagues and in DFS in the right matchups. Yastrzemski hit .233/.330/.445 with 15 homers and 43 RBI in 106 games played in 2023.
San Francisco Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski is likely to go on paternity leave for the first Friday through Sunday of the 2024 regular season, per the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. The 33-year-old and his family are expecting their second child, so he may miss some of the team's first few games. Yastrzemski has cooled off in his career after a few solid fantasy seasons and slashed .233/.330/.445 with 15 home runs, 54 runs scored, 43 RBI, and two stolen bases in 381 plate appearances in 2023 while dealing with a left hamstring strain.
San Francisco Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski (shoulder) made his spring training debut on Wednesday, serving as the designated hitter and batting third in the lineup for the Cactus League game against the Oakland Athletics. Yastrzemski was held back a bit due to a left-shoulder impingement, but he has improved now and is ready to play in games as the DH. The 33-year-old should start playing the outfield soon and is fully expected to be ready for Opening Day in late March. Before he's cleared to play in spring games in the outfield, Yaz is scheduled to throw from 110-120 feet. Yastrzemski isn't going to give fantasy managers much help in the batting-average department, but he can provide decent counting stats in the strong side of a platoon in San Fran's outfield in deep-mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues if he can stay healthy.

2019 was a feel-good season for Mike Yastrzemski, as the then 28-year-old posted a .272/.334/.518 slash line with 21 HR, 64 runs scored, and 55 RBI over 411 plate appearances. However, fantasy players were not ready to believe in him going into 2020. Yastrzemski backed things up with a strong follow-up season, compiling a.297/.400/.568 slash line with 10 home runs and 35 RBI over 225 plate appearances. Importantly, he made some solid plate discipline improvements. Yastrzemski was more selective, swinging at fewer pitches in the strike zone. He also swung at fewer pitches out of the strike zone, increased his walk rate significantly, and had a higher BABIP in addition to batting average. He may not be the most exciting fantasy player, but he has established a high floor. As such, his current ADP of 134 seems perfectly reasonable.
