Sean Murphy News
Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy (oblique) is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week, which could start as early as Monday. This is a very encouraging development for the Braves, who lost Murphy to a strained left oblique all the way back on Opening Day. The 29-year-old All-Star backstop has remained sidelined with the injury far longer than it was originally anticipated, but he's back on course to get back behind the dish for Atlanta sometime in late May if all goes well. Fantasy managers who have been streaming Travis d'Arnaud probably should start making other arrangements, but with the veteran slashing a strong .260/.342/.510 with five home runs, 10 doubles, and 16 RBI over 100 at-bats this year, he remains a hold in two-catcher leagues until Murphy returns.
Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker said that catcher Sean Murphy (oblique) has advanced to hitting in the batting cages after hitting off a tee twice last week. Murphy is inching closer to a return from the Grade 1 left-oblique strain that he suffered in the season opener. The 29-year-old is going to need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before he returns to the Braves, too, so fantasy baseball managers are going to need to wait a little longer before they get the catcher back. The former third-round pick of the Oakland Athletics in 2016 out of Wright State was a first-time All-Star in 2023 in his first season with the Braves and should remain stashed in all fantasy leagues as one of the better offensive catchers in baseball when healthy. Veteran Travis d'Arnaud will continue to serve as the team's starter behind the plate until Murphy returns.
Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy (oblique) swung off a tee in Seattle during the team's series earlier this week against the Mariners. Murphy felt good, and he's going to keep building up from there. There was originally some hope that Murphy would have been over his Grade 1 left oblique strain, which he suffered back on March 29, by early May, but there's no clear timeline for his return at this stage of his recovery. The 29-year-old All-Star backstop probably won't be back with the Braves until the mid-to-late portion of May. In Murphy's stead, former All-Star Travis d'Arnaud has operated as Atlanta's primary catcher and is worth streaming in all fantasy formats in the meantime. d'Arnaud is slashing a robust .282/.358/.592 with five home runs, seven doubles, 16 RBI, and 12 runs scored in 81 trips to the plate (25 games) this year.

Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy posted a productive, yet frustrating season in 2023 and fantasy managers should expect more of the same in 2024. On a per-plate-appearance basis, one can argue Murphy was the best catcher in fantasy. However, the Braves split catching duties between Murphy and Travis d'Arnaud, leading to only 438 PA for Murphy, who was on the bench more than most starting catchers. When he was in the lineup, Murphy mashed. His 21 HR ranked fifth-best among catchers, despite having over 100 fewer PA than other top-catching options. Murphy's .251/.365/.478 triple-slash line represented career-bests for the first-year Brave. Best of all, Murphy's pristine Statcast numbers fully supported his breakout campaign. He set career highs in xBA (.270), xSLG (.525), and xwOBA (.390) while smoking the ball to the tune of a 91.4 MPH average exit velocity and a whopping 15% barrel-rate. Entering his age-29 season, Murphy should continue his steady production moving forward. D'Arnaud remains an issue, however, as he will play more than virtually every other backup catcher in baseball. That decreases Murphy's value in points leagues, where volume is king. However, in roto formats Murphy remains a top-target to fill the catcher slot and his upside is sky-high in all leagues if he can get to even 500 PA.
