Shane Baz News
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane Baz (elbow) threw 59 pitches across 1 2/3 innings on Friday in a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Durham. Baz was expected to go a bit longer in this start but ran into some trouble. He allowed three earned runs, one hit, and five free passes. He struck out one. While this was not the performance Baz expected, he did add 20 pitches to his pitch count compared to his previous rehab outing of 39. The 24-year-old has not started a major-league game since July 10, 2022. Fantasy managers should expect Baz back on a major-league mound before the end of the month but should tamper their expectations, as the Rays will likely lean on the side of caution with their young, hard-throwing right-hander.
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) gave up three runs on three hits over three innings while walking one and striking out none in his first minor-league rehab assignment for Triple-A Durham on Saturday. Twenty-two of his 39 pitches went for strikes, and his four-seam fastball topped out at 97.1 mph. The 24-year-old missed all of last year after having Tommy John surgery. He was never expected to have a significant workload in 2024 after missing so much time, especially after he dealt with two minor oblique setbacks during his comeback. He essentially began his buildup after spring training ended and was put on the 15-day injured list on March 26. Baz will likely need several more rehab starts before Tampa thinks about activating him. Fantasy managers in single-year leagues need to temper their expectations for Baz in 2024 in his first season coming off Tommy John surgery.
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane Baz (elbow) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment either on Friday or Saturday with Triple-A Durham. After throwing two innings in an extended spring game last Wednesday, Baz pitched in another spring outing on Monday as he continues to build up his pitch count from Tommy John surgery. While it's unclear how far out he is from making his 2024 regular-season debut, the 24-year-old former top prospect should be able to rejoin Tampa Bay's injury-depleted rotation before the end of May. Baz owns a strong 28.9% strikeout rate in 40 1/3 career innings (nine starts), which makes him a worthy stash in all fantasy leagues. Veteran right-hander Zack Littell holds a respectable 3.27 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 35:5 K:BB over 33 frames (six starts) for the Rays this season, and he'll be a decent streaming option in Saturday's scheduled home start versus the New York Mets.

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane Baz enters the 2024 season as the ultimate unknown for fantasy baseball managers. On one hand, we haven't seen the young phenom pitch since July of 2022, as Tommy John Surgery sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. On the other hand, Baz is a lights-out flamethrower with tantalizing upside that's impossible to ignore. In 40 innings from 2021 to 2022, Baz struck out 48 batters thanks to a 29% K-rate and an eye-popping 14.2% swinging-strike rate at the MLB level. His numbers in the minors were even more impressive. In 2021, Baz struck out 40% of batters in Double-A before he whiffed 64 batters in 46 innings while posting an elite 37% K-rate in Triple-A. When healthy, Baz will generate tons of whiffs and post ace-like strikeout numbers. The downside is Baz has never thrown more than 92 innings in a season and given his recent injuries, expect the Rays to be ultra-cautious with the 24-year-old prospect. On a per-inning basis, Baz can be dominant and he's an attractive fantasy option when healthy. Those that use a top-200 draft pick on him simply need to know he won't pitch deep into games, he will have starts skipped, and it'll be shocking if he throws more than 100-120 innings in 2024, if that. Each fantasy manager will need to assess their own risk tolerance when deciding to roll the dice on Baz.
