Sonny Gray News
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray posted another strong outing on Monday versus his former team, the Oakland Athletics. Gray went six scoreless innings and allowed four hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Gray missed the beginning of the season with a hamstring injury, but he has not missed a beat in his two starts this season with 11 scoreless innings, no walks and 11 strikeouts. Gray will eventually walk a batter this season, but managers could not have asked for a better start to the season then what Gray has given them. Moving forward, Gray is lined up to face the division rival Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray will be limited to 75 pitches in Monday's start against the Oakland A's. Gray spent a large portion of spring training dealing with a hamstring issue that limited him to just two starts, so it makes sense why the Cardinals are gradually increasing the veteran's pitch count. In his first start of the year against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 9, he threw 64 pitches across five shutout innings. Now, St. Louis has set his limit at around 75 pitches in his second start. The pitch limit shouldn't worry fantasy managers, though. If you roster the 34-year-old in fantasy, you should be starting him in a plus matchup against Oakland.
Making his season debut on Tuesday, St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray put together five strong innings in a victory against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was his first start of the season and for his new team as he was sidelined with a hamstring injury, but Gray didn't miss a beat allowing five hits, zero runs, zero walks and striking out five. The veteran signed a three-year deal to be the Cardinals ace this offseason and they will count on the right-hander to anchor their staff. From a fantasy perspective, Gray remains a solid option with a career 3.46 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Gray will look to build off his season debut with a matchup versus one of his former teams, the Oakland Athletics in a very favorable matchup on Tuesday.

Sonny Gray posted a stellar 2023 for the Twins, going 8-8 with a 2.79 ERA and 3.64 xFIP in 184 IP. However, Gray is not a good value at his ADP of 124.96. Gray's 5.2% HR/FB was less than half his career rate of 11.5, so regression is coming. Gray's 24.3 K% was also league-average, and a quick look at his repertoire offers little strikeout upside. Gray throws six pitches: a fastball (6.6 SwStr%), a slider (19.8 SwStr%), a curve (12.6 SwStr%), a sinker (6.9 SwStr%), a cutter (13 SwStr%), and a change (6.4 SwStr%). All are below-average save for Gray's slider, which is let down by a 37.7 Zone% and 38.9% chase rate. Without strikeouts, Gray is more reliant on his defense than most. Some are saying that the Cards defense will help him, but the Cardinals weren't a good defensive team in 2023 with -6 Outs Above Average. With Gray's pedestrian strikeout totals and outsized reliance on luck to produce wins and ratio help, it makes more sense to select a high-upside arm such as Hunter Greene (130.01 ADP) who will do more good if everything breaks right.
