Spencer Steer News
Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Spencer Steer got the scoring started in Wednesday's 6-2 loss on the road to the San Diego Padres, smashing his fourth home run of the 2024 regular season and stealing a base. Steer took Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove yard for a 412-foot bomb to deep left center in the first inning, continuing what has been a prolific start to the campaign for him. The 26-year-old left fielder is building on his 2023 breakout thus far, slashing .252/.364/.450 with four long balls, 22 RBI, 18 runs scored, and eight stolen bases through 132 trips to the plate (31 outings) for the Reds. On tap for Steer is a three-game weekend series starting on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. In three games against Baltimore last season, Steer hit .400 (4-for-10) with one big fly, three RBI, three walks, and one pilfer.
Cincinnati Reds utilityman Spencer Steer continued his hot streak in Monday's 6-3 extra-innings win over the Phillies, going 2-for-5 with a double, a 10th-inning, go-ahead grand slam, and a strikeout. The 26-year-old has started 2024 where he left off in 2023, slashing .400/.471/.733 with seven RBI and a stolen base in his first 17 plate appearances. His multi-position eligibility and strong lineup context should keep Steer as a valuable fantasy asset in the early going.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder/infielder Spencer Steer chipped in three runs during Wednesday's 19-11 Cactus League win over the San Francisco Giants, going 2-for-3 with a walk. It was certainly a high-scoring affair on Wednesday, and Steer was able to maintain his strong spring returns. In 26 spring training at-bats, the versatile 26-year-old is batting .296 with an .836 OPS, one home run, five RBI, and three stolen bases. After his first stint in the big leagues went poorly in 2022, Steer was a revelation for the Reds a season ago and finished sixth in National League Rookie of the Year voting via a .271/.356/.464 slash line, 23 homers, 37 doubles, 86 RBI, and 15 stolen bases across 665 trips to the plate. Steer is a 2024 regression candidate due to his .252 xBA and .417 xSLG on Statcast, but his position eligibility is appealing, and Noelvi Marte's 80-game suspension means Steer will be needed for everyday ABs during at least the first half in Cincy.

The 26-year-old Spencer Steer didn't receive the hype of many of his highly-regarded teammates, but he still delivered a .271/.356/.464 line with 23 HR and 15 SB over 665 PAs for his fantasy managers in 2023. Steer doesn't have eye-popping tools, instead relying on volume for his production. For example, you aren't impressed with his 92.9 mph average airborne exit velocity, 6.7% rate of Brls/BBE, or his max exit velocity of 110.6 mph. However, Steer hit 43% of his batted balls in the air and plays in the best ballpark for home runs per Statcast, so we can expect him to accumulate 20-25 HR again as the club's everyday left fielder. Similarly, Steer's 28.4 ft./sec Statcast Sprint Speed is more good than great but his 83% success rate on SB attempts should keep the green light. Steer possesses a good eye that should keep his strikeouts in check (27.7% chase rate, 20.9 K% in 2023), but his .250 xBA suggests his average might decline a little. Still, a .250ish average with power and some speed is a good value at Steer's ADP of 105.66 even if it isn't the sexiest possible pick.
