Minnesota Timberwolves forward/center Karl-Anthony Towns posted a team-high 23 points in Tuesday's 112-97 loss to the Nuggets despite hurting his left knee early in the game. In an unfortunate incident, Towns banged knees with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and had to briefly exit the game near the end of the first quarter. He moved gingerly after returning, but the Timberwolves trainers apparently worked wonders during the halftime break, as Towns looked completely fine in the second half. Towns, who had meniscus surgery on the same knee during the regular season, added six rebounds, four assists, and two steals to his line, shooting 10-for-19 from the field, including 2-for-5 from deep. It looks like the Timberwolves star escaped serious injury, but he could still pop up on the injury report ahead of Thursday's Game 6.
On Tuesday, Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley (Achilles) is listed as questionable for Game 5 versus the Denver Nuggets. Due to right Achilles soreness, Conley is a late addition to the team's injury report. The 36-year-old veteran point guard is averaging 11.9 points, 6.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 31.2 minutes during the playoffs. If he is absent, Jordan McLaughlin, Monte Morris, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker could see an uptick in minutes during the contest.
Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley was very close to his second postseason double-double of the year as the team went 115-107 down to the Nuggets on Sunday. The veteran scored 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting, hitting three of seven attempts from downtown, and handed out a game-high nine assists. Conley also extended his streak with at least one steal to seven games and grabbed a pair of rebounds. It's been a good postseason campaign for Conley, who's averaging 11.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 1.1 steals in 31.8 minutes in the playoffs.
Minnesota Timberwolves guard/forward Anthony Edwards scored 44 points on 16-for-25 shooting in Sunday's Game 4 loss to Denver, setting a new career playoff high and a franchise record. In fact, Edwards now boasts the top three postseason-scoring performances in Timberwolves history. On Sunday, he was also able to notch five rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block while shooting 5-for-8 from deep. The 22-year-old has looked incredible this postseason, averaging 32.1 points, and something even more special could be coming up from him as Minnesota tries to shift the momentum of the series in the next couple of games.
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert has been voted the 2023-24 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. The French giant receives the award for a record-tying fourth time. He joins Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace as the only four-time winners. Gobert finished sixth in blocks this season with 2.1 swats per game and limited the opposition to 45.2 percent effective field goal percentage, helping the Timberwolves register the league's best defensive rating during the regular season. He was fourth in the league with 9.2 defensive rebounds per game and second in rebounding overall with 12.9 boards.
