Gavin Williams News
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams (elbow) felt the same right-elbow discomfort after his latest start in Arizona as he did this spring. He will receive an injection and will be shut down for seven days as a result. The Guardians are hoping Williams can then resume throwing and won't be set back too far. It's obviously bad news, and there remains no timetable for a potential return for the 24-year-old. Williams started last year at Double-A Akron before making it all the way to Cleveland's starting rotation in his rookie campaign, where he impressed by going 3-5 with a 3.29 ERA (4.05 FIP) and 1.26 WHIP with 37 walks and 81 strikeouts in 82 innings over 16 starts. It's becoming more of an uphill battle for Williams to return to the Guardians in the first half of 2024.
Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said before Friday's game versus the Oakland Athletics that starting pitcher Gavin Williams (elbow) will pitch on Saturday in Arizona. After throwing his first simulated game on Monday, Williams appears to be closing in on a minor-league rehab assignment if all continues to go smoothly in his recovery from right elbow discomfort. Although he has a chance to be activated from the injured list before April's end, an early-May return is probably more realistic. The 24-year-old former top prospect recorded a 3.29 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 81:37 K:BB across 82 innings (16 starts) for the Guards in his rookie season in 2023, and it's about time to make sure he's not floating around any waiver wires in fantasy leagues. In the meantime, veterans Carlos Carrasco and Ben Lively will keep battling to hold down spots in Cleveland's rotation when Williams eventually makes his 2024 regular-season debut.
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this week during the series against the Seattle Mariners that ends on Wednesday. Williams landed on the injured list to begin the 2024 regular season after dealing with right-elbow inflammation in the middle of spring training in March. The 24-year-old will hopefully embark on a minor-league rehab assignment shortly after he gets back on the mound. Barring setbacks on his rehab assignment, he has a chance to make his season debut before the end of April. The former 23rd overall pick in 2021 out of East Carolina went 3-5 with a solid 3.29 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 37 walks and 81 strikeouts in 82 innings in his first 16 major-league starts in 2023, so he will have a rotation spot waiting for him when he's ready.

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams is one of the more exciting young right-handers in the game. A former first-round pick who's 24 and was a top prospect, Williams had a good 2023 on the surface. A 3.29 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 81 strikeouts in 82 innings shows the promise Williams has. All wasn't as rosy under the hood, however, and Williams has some things to improve on if he wants to duplicate last season's numbers. His xERA, xBA, and K% were all near league average. The 6-foot-6-inch righty was in the bottom fourth of the league in Chase %, BB %, and GB %. Combine that with a little luck, a .270 BABIP and a 9.2% HR/FB rate, and Williams has some work to do before making a breakthrough at the major league level. A 4.53 xFIP and 4.61 SIERA show how lucky Williams was in 2023. There's no saying Williams can't repeat his outcome from last season, he has the pedigree and stuff to do so, he'll just have to improve in some areas. RotoBaller's 164 rank would be a good place to target him, knowing he has the potential for better performances as he gets more acclimated to the show.
