James Wood News
Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood has been one of the best hitters in the minor leagues this season and is now ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect on MLB Pipeline. Through 35 games at Triple-A this season, Wood has posted an incredible .346/.444/.581 slash line with seven long balls and nine stolen bases. The 21-year-old entered this season with major questions regarding his strikeout rate, as he posted a 124:39 K:BB last season at Double-A. However, he has put all of those doubts to rest so far this season with a significantly improved 32:25 K:BB. Wood has also been making headlines through the early part of May with an eye-catching .805 slugging percentage and five home runs. He should be considered a must-stash in all fantasy formats and could make an immediate impact at the major-league level when promoted.
Washington Nationals outfield prospect James Wood is currently slashing a ridiculous .339/.444/.529 with a .973 OPS, 11 doubles, 14 RBI, 23 walks, 30 strikeouts, eight stolen bases and four home runs with Triple-A Rochester. The club's No. 2 prospect and No. 12 in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline, hit two of his four homers on Wednesday. It's looking like Wood has nothing left to prove in the minors, but Washington has a plan for him and they plan on sticking to it. Despite his electric start this year, the Nats have more boxes for the 21-year-old to check before he makes his big-league debut. "He needs to get a bunch of at-bats," Martinez said. "He needs to learn some different things." The team's active 26-man roster is in a bit of a crunch at the major-league level right now, too. Wood is going to get his chance eventually this year, though, and he should be stashed in all fantasy leagues if you have the room.
Washington Nationals outfield prospect James Wood smacked two home runs on Wednesday for Triple-A Rochester, extending his hit streak to five games. The home runs were his third and fourth of the season and first since a two-homer game back on April 11. The 21-year-old is making a push for a call-up to the big league club after a sensational spring training and is now slashing .339/.444/.529 at Triple-A with eight stolen bases. Expect to see baseball's 12th-ranked prospect in D.C. by the end of June, but possibly sooner, and not only should he already be on dynasty squads, managers that have an open bench spot could start thinking about stashing him in season-long formats.

Washington Nationals outfielder outfielder James Wood is an impressive athlete considering his 6'7" frame, and many will be quick to throw an Aaron Judge comp on him, as anyone who is over 6'5" tends to get. He moves well for his size and is a fast runner once he gets going. In 2023, Wood spent time between High-A and Double-A, with the majority of his season being spent in Double-A Harrisburg. Wood slashed .262/.353/.520 between both stops, with 26 home runs and 18 stolen bases. The concerns come in when you see the 173 strikeouts, good for a 31.5 percent rate. The contact rate of 68 percent leaves plenty to be desired, but there are plenty of positives to take away from the lefty with long levers. Wood has massive power, to no surprise, as he has 41 career home runs in 850 at-bats, with 26 of them coming this season. Wood's 90th percentile exit velocity of 109 mph shows massive power and firmly puts him in the 60-70 grade range for power. In addition to the power, Wood also shows a solid approach, chasing just 26 percent of pitches out of the zone, which is better than average, and showing the ability to mash fastballs. There are major concerns about his struggles with breaking balls and changeups, and it seems like Wood spends the majority of the 2024 season in the minors and likely has a late-season cup of coffee.
