Miles Mikolas News
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas will look to get straightened out when he takes the ball for a road contest against the New York Mets. The 35-year-old was knocked around for nine hits, including three homers, leading to five earned runs allowed in just 4 1/3 innings in a losing effort against the Brewers his last time out. It was the second consecutive outing and third of five on the season in which the veteran has allowed five earned runs in less than five innings this season. The rough outing raised his ERA to 6.49 through five starts, although his 4.05 xFIP, 4.28 SIERA, and solid 6% BB% suggest positive regression is likely moving forward.
With St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray (hamstring) not set to be cleared to pitch on Opening Day on March 28 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road, right-hander Miles Mikolas has been tabbed as the Opening Day starter for the Red Birds. Not only is Mikolas not much of a mixed-league target in standard 12-team fantasy leagues, but he should be considered a poor DFS option on Opening Day against a strong Dodgers lineup that added Shohei Ohtani in the offseason. The 35-year-old veteran is hoping an improved slider will make him more effective this year after he had a 4.78 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 39 walks, 137 strikeouts and league-highs in hits allowed (226) and earned runs (107). There's just not much fantasy upside from a pitcher with a career 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings in eight years in the majors.
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas was an All-Star in 2018 and 2022, but he struggled to a 9-13 record, 4.78 ERA (4.27 FIP) and 1.32 WHIP with a league-high 226 hits allowed, a league-high 107 earned runs given up, 39 walks and 137 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings over 35 starts. The 35-year-old topped the 200-inning mark for the third time in his career, but his 16.7% whiff rate was in the bottom one percent of the league, per Baseball Savant. Mikolas also had career-worsts in hard-hit rate (43%) and average exit velocity (90.4 mph). To bounce back in 2024, he's working hard on his slider and the sequencing of his pitches. He may try to throw less strikes on purpose as well -- because he rarely walks hitters, they have become much more aggressive against him. His poor 2023 campaign and his age has dropped Mikolas out of RotoBaller's top-100 starting pitcher rankings.

St. Louis Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas had his first productive season since 2018, going 12-13 with a 3.29 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a career-high 19% strikeout rate. His arsenal remained the same as he threw a four-seam fastball (27.4%), slider (25.4%), sinker (22.3%), curveball (20.8%), and changeup (4%). However, Mikolas' best swing-and-miss pitch, the slider, took a big hit in whiff rate, dropping 6.1 percentage points. Overall, his whiff rate increased from 2021 but was still just 18.5% and was the second-worst mark of his career. Mikolas knows how to limit hard contact with a career 87.6 MPH average exit velocity but still carries a career .410 xSLG, including a .400 mark this season. The 34-year-old relied on ground balls the last four seasons (48.9% ground ball rate), so if he can't generate more than he did during 2022 when he posted a 45.9% rate, he might find it hard to limit the damage. He's always going to be one of the best command pitchers, but with a strikeout rate that will likely regress, it might be hard for Mikolas to overcome a BABIP that will increase from this season's .249. He could find a way to be serviceable again in 2023. However, Mikolas owns a 4.10 FIP over the past three seasons, and his volatile approach to pitching isn't trustworthy. The best thing fantasy managers might get from Mikolas is double-digit wins, which isn't worth his 234 ADP.
