Reese Olson News
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson has secured himself a spot in the team's Opening Day starting rotation after the club optioned Matt Manning to Triple-A Toledo on Friday. Olson beat out Manning by posting a 3.68 ERA with 14 strikeouts and four walks in 14 2/3 innings in Grapefruit League action. In his rookie season in 2023 with Detroit, the 24-year-old former 13th-round pick in 2018 by the Milwaukee Brewers went 5-7 with a 3.99 ERA (4.01 FIP) and 1.12 WHIP while walking 33 and striking out 103 in 103 2/3 frames over 21 appearances (18 starts). Olson doesn't have above-average stuff, but he has a five-pitch mix and is a sneaky flier in deep-mixed leagues and AL-only setups in his sophomore season.
Detroit Tigers righty Reese Olson is getting ready to make his next start, which will come Friday against Mike Clevinger and the Chicago White Sox. The results haven't been there for the 24-year-old, as he owns a 4.65 ERA and 1.21 WHIP but is striking out hitters at a decent 23.8% rate over 79 1/3 innings. Fantasy managers should leave Olson on the waiver wire in most formats, but he has the stuff to be a future contributor, making him an under-the-radar dynasty arm.
Detroit Tigers rookie right-hander Reese Olson will be plugged back into the starting rotation and make the start on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners. Olson has started five games in his first taste of the big leagues this year, but he had been working in a relief role just prior to the All-Star break this week. The 23-year-old hasn't been bad in his first 33 1/3 big-league innings, posting a 4.05 ERA (3.46 FIP), 0.99 WHIP, eight walks and 35 strikeouts in eight appearances. He hasn't been as sharp in his five starts, though, allowing 15 runs (13 earned) on 20 hits (four homers) while walking six and fanning 27 in 21 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old will have a solid matchup against Seattle in his return to a starting role this weekend, though, and he could stick around in the rotation for a bit longer if he handles himself well on Sunday.
