Trevor Larnach News
The Minnesota Twins announced on Tuesday that they recalled outfielder Trevor Larnach (toe) from Triple-A St. Paul and optioned outfielder Matt Wallner to St. Paul in a corresponding move. Larnach was recently activated from the Triple-A injured list due to turf toe, but he'll now head to Minnesota to make his 2024 debut. Wallner will head to the farm to work on some things after starting off 2-for-25 with the Twins. The 27-year-old Larnach started last year in the big leagues but was sent to St. Paul after a slow start at the plate. The left-handed slugger has some intriguing power upside from the left side in a likely platoon role in Minnesota, but he's probably not going to help your team batting average and has been injury-prone in his career to this point.
Minnesota Twins outfielder Trevor Larnach (toe) is starting his minor-league rehab assignment on Thursday night with Single-A Fort Myers. Larnach is working his way back after being placed on the Triple-A injured list on March 29 due to turf toe. If the 27-year-old outfielder doesn't suffer any setbacks with his toe while with Fort Myers, he'll be returned to Triple-A St. Paul in short order. The former 20th overall pick in 2018 out of Oregon State has yet to stick at the major-league level, hitting .222/.315/.385 with 20 home runs and 86 RBI in 188 games played in parts of the last three seasons. Nothing about his defense in the outfield stands out, and although he has drawn plenty of walks, he's failed to make enough consistent contact at the plate to play regularly for the Twins. A platoon role will be likely if he's back with the Twins in 2024.
The Minnesota Twins left-handed-hitting outfielders continue to draw trade interest with the Aug. 1 trade deadline nearly here, namely Max Kepler, Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner. Larnach is drawing interest from multiple teams, including the San Diego Padres and New York Mets. Given the team's preference to trade off the MLB roster or Triple-A St. Paul, dealing from this strength seems likely by Tuesday. Larnach, a 26-year-old former first-rounder, makes perfect sense to be shipped away, as he hasn't really had much of an impact yet consistently in the major leagues for the Twins. In 162 at-bats in 2023, he's hitting just .216/.314/.401 with six home runs, 32 RBI and 23 runs scored in 50 games. Larnach is slashing .223/.315/.380 with a .695 OPS in his three big-league seasons.

Larnach's 2021 outlook would be a lot rosier if there weren't so many talented players to push past in hopes of receiving meaningful playing time. With the assumption that DH Nelson Cruz finds his way back to Minnesota, left field is the only unsettled position on the club. With fellow rookies Alex Kirilloff and underrated Brent Rooker a step ahead of Larnach (as well as a few other less talented players including Jake Cave), it will be a waiting game for the former first-round pick. Had the 2020 minor league season not been wiped out, he may have already forced his way to the Majors. But with just 43 games of experience above A-ball, there is no reason for the Twins to rush this slugger. Larnach has massive raw power and the potential to eventually hit 30 homers in the Majors but he went deep just 13 times in 2019 in part because he hit too many balls on the ground. He's hit for a high average at every stop of his career but as a slow-footed, corner outfielder he's not going to maintain .380 BABIPs for long even if he hits the ball really, really hard. Larnach should settle in as a high on-base, 30-homer slugger who produces an average in the .260-.280 range, which makes him a very valuable dynasty prospect. The Twins' depth will limit him to an intriguing 2021 redraft waiver target.
