George Kirby News
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher George Kirby got things back on track in Monday's 6-2 win over the Royals. Kirby turned in seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and no walks with six strikeouts. He also hit two batters. The 26-year-old is now 4-3 with a 3.58 ERA, a 9.12 K/9 rate, and a 0.89 BB/9 rate in nine starts and 50 1/3 IP. He will face a tougher matchup in his next scheduled start at the Orioles, but fantasy managers should feel comfortable starting him unless they have the luxury of better alternatives.
Seattle Mariners right-hander George Kirby (knee) has been cleared to make his next start this Wednesday to face the Twins in Minnesota. Kirby threw 88 pitches in his most recent start last Friday against the Houston Astros but dealt with a right-knee injury, which put him up in the air to make his next start. Apparently the 26-year-old's injury isn't serious enough to keep him from taking his next turn in Seattle's rotation, but fantasy managers may want to be a little extra careful when deploying him against a Twins team that just had their 12-game winning streak snapped on Sunday by the Boston Red Sox. Kirby has been good in his seven starts so far in 2024, going 3-2 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings, so fantasy managers in most single-year leagues will probably want to keep him in their starting lineups.
Seattle Mariners right-hander George Kirby (knee) had an MRI on his right knee on Saturday as a precaution. Mariners manager Scott Servais is optimistic Kirby won't miss any time and will make his next start Thursday against the Minnesota Twins. The 26-year-old was pulled from Friday's outing against the Houston Astros after just 88 pitches. Kirby's knee injury doesn't sound serious, and the MRI results should confirm the severity of his issue. He owns a 3.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and a 41:4 K:BB across 38 1/3 innings in 2024. Fantasy managers should continue to roll with Kirby as long as he's cleared for his next scheduled start on Thursday.

A former first-round pick and top prospect in the Seattle Mariners farm system, starting pitcher George Kirby established himself as a model of consistency during his first full season in 2023. Kirby logged 20 quality starts out of his 31 appearances for the Mariners last year, with his microscopic 0.9 walks per nine innings leading the way in the major leagues. Overall, the 25-year-old right-hander finished with a rock-solid 3.35 ERA (3.34 FIP), 1.04 WHIP, and 172:19 K:BB across 190 2/3 innings. Kirby's command of his six-pitch arsenal is his calling card, resulting in plenty of chase, but his lack of overwhelming stuff won't lead to a high rate of whiffs and can occasionally get him hit hard. That caveat could keep him out of the top-tier range of SPs, but throwing from MLB's most pitcher-friendly ballpark in Seattle should continue to work wonders for Kirby and an M's pitching staff that ranked first in the AL in team ERA (3.74) a year ago. The first-time All-Star's ability to provide length should bode well for his chances of supplying fantasy rosters with wins and compensating for a subpar 22.7% strikeout rate, collecting 13 victories a year ago. Treat Kirby as a top-50 pick and a top-10 positional option in the fourth- or fifth-round of drafts for 2024, especially in head-to-head leagues for his dependability.
