Sean Manaea News
New York Mets starting pitcher Sean Manaea suffered his first loss of the season in a horrific outing on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. Manaea gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings, making this easily his worst start as a Met. The start raised the lefty's ERA from 0.82 to 4.30. These numbers more closely match was Manaea has traditionally been as he was likely over-achieving to start the season. Things won't get much easier for Manaea going forward as his next slated start will be in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on Friday, a team that has generally fared well against the lefty.
New York Mets starting pitcher Sean Manaea has been refining his pitch arsenal during spring training. The 32-year-old lefty spent the 2021 and 2022 off-seasons at Driveline Baseball in Kent, WA to work on his velocity and pitch mix. The hard work during the offseason paid off as he put together a solid 4.44 ERA (3.90 FIP), 1.241 WHIP, and 128:42 K/BB ratio over 117 2/3 innings (37 appearances, 10 starts) with the San Francisco Giants. His sweeper and changeup were two of his best pitches last season and he's added a cutter to his arsenal as well. The Mets plan to have Manaea start the year in their rotation so their plan during spring training is to optimize and refine his pitches to give him a solid plan on how to deploy them all against batters. Given his recent resurgence, Manaea is worth a dart throw late in fantasy drafts this spring.
New York Mets left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea has officially signed a two-year, $28 million contract with the team. This deal was announced last week but now the team has made it official. Manaea was a free agent this offseason and coming off a 4.44 ERA (3.90 FIP), 1.241 WHIP, and 128:42 K/BB over 117 2/3 innings (37 appearances, 10 starts) with the San Francisco Giants. The deal also includes an opt-out after the 2024 season. This has been viewed as a solid move by the Mets as the veteran left-hander can work out of the bullpen and be used as a spot starter as well.

Oakland Athletics pitcher Sean Manaea posted an 11-10 record, 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and a career-high 194 strikeouts over 179 1/3 innings in 2021. The 30-year-old owned a solid 25.7 K% but had trouble keeping the ball in the yard, evidenced by allowing a career-worst 1.25 HR:9 last season. To put hitters away, he relied primarily on three pitches, a sinker, changeup, and curveball. The 30-year-old could join the next tier in starters if he's able to continue to rack up the strikeouts, limit the home runs, and keep up his impressive low walk rate (last year's 5.4 BB% was in the 89th percentile). Cutter projects the lefty to own a 3.84 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 15 quality starts, and 158 strikeouts over 166 frames in 2022. According to Rotoballer's Expected Draft Values, Cutter's projections for Manaea put him roughly fair value at his ADP of 158. Manaea is a solid mid-round pick that should provide stable ratios and excellent strikeout totals for fantasy managers in 2022.
