Yasmani Grandal News
Pittsburgh Pirates backstop Yasmani Grandal launched his second home run in just seven games with his new club on Monday. The 35-year-old looks to be settling in quite nicely in the Steel City with an impressive .545 SLG through his first week as a Pirate. Grandal was on the 15-day injured list to open the season with plantar fasciitis but is now looking like his past self. Grandal began splitting catching duties with Joey Bart, but he has now started each of the past four games, suggesting he has a slight lead for the starting role. Grandal is worth adding in NL-only formats for the time being but could force his way into mixed leagues if his power surge continues.
Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal is making his first start of the season and will bat in the six-hole against Colorado Rockies southpaw Austin Gomber. Grandal was activated from the injured list on Friday after recovering from plantar fasciitis, a move that also sent Henry Davis down to Triple-A. The 35-year-old catcher posted a .234/.309/.339 stat line with eight long balls last season and should be expected to split duties behind the dish with Joey Bart for the time being. Grandal could emerge as an option in NL-only leagues if he can produce at the plate, especially from a power standpoint. Grandal is worth consideration as a sneaky pay in DFS as Austin Gomber enters Saturday with a hefty 4.50 ERA.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are activating veteran catcher Yasmani Grandal (foot) from the injured list on Friday and have optioned catcher/outfielder Henry Davis to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move, according to manager Derek Shelton. Grandal is returning from plantar fasciitis in his left foot and will platoon with Joey Bart being the plate moving forward. The switch-hitting 35-year-old will be making his 2024 debut when he gets into a game, but he'll start on the bench on Friday with Bart getting the start. Davis, the former first overall pick in 2021 out of Louisville, will head to the farm to work on his swing after hitting a miserable .162 (11-for-68) with no home runs, 11 walks and 29 strikeouts in 83 plate appearances.

Grandal proved to be one of the White Sox most valuable hitters during the 2021 season despite playing only 93 games. He popped 23 homers in that limited time (an elite 16.3 PA/HR) with one of the best OBP marks in the league at .420 (on a ridiculous 23% walk rate his career mark is 15%). He would have decimated most of his career-bests if he did not miss so much time to injury, and that has drafters excited for what the 2022 season holds. Grandal is currently the fifth catcher off the board in drafts with an ADP of 106. That is a hefty price to pay for a catcher (especially in non-OBP leagues) but Grandal is a rare example of a catcher you can feel very confident about getting offensive production from. The worst-case scenario (given health, of course) still leads Grandal to boosting your team in on-base percentage while giving you a good amount of home runs. He will also likely get some starts at DH, which gives him one of the best volume projections at the position as well. The price is justified in OBP leagues, but you are likely overpaying for Grandal in leagues where that is not the case.
