C.J. Uzomah News
Free-agent tight end C.J. Uzomah, the former starter for the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets, is expected to sign an undisclosed one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Uzomah flew to Philadelphia on Thursday and passed his physical and should bolster the team's passing attack to give them another weapon. The 31-year-old was released by the Jets in early March after catching just 29 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns in 27 games for the Jets after signing a three-year, $24 million deal in 2022. Uzomah, a former fifth-round pick of the Bengals in 2015 out of Auburn, only played in 12 games (eight starts) in 2023 and ended the year on Injured Reserve with an MCL knee injury. He won't be on the fantasy radar this fall as a backup behind Dallas Goedert alongside Grant Calcaterra and Albert Okwuegbunam.
The New York Jets are planning to release tight end C.J. Uzomah (knee), according to sources. The move was fully expected and will save the Jets $5 million-plus on the 2024 salary cap. Uzomah is coming off knee surgery and was set to count $11.2 million on the cap this year. The 31-year-old veteran spent two years with the Jets and was a non-factor on offense, catching 29 of his 39 targets for 290 yards and three touchdowns in 27 games played (21 starts). He played in only 12 games (eight starts) in 2023 and had eight receptions for 58 yards and one touchdown. Uzomah has never eclipsed 500 receiving yards in his nine seasons in the NFL and isn't going to have a robust free-agent market while coming off knee surgery.
New York Jets tight end C.J. Uzomah and offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson are two of the team's potential salary cap cuts this offseason. Uzomah is a near lock to be released, but the Jets will save less money than they would have had general manager Joe Douglas not restructured Uzomah's contract last offseason. Cutting him would save $5.3 million with $5.9 million in dead cap space. The Jets will also save $5.4 million if/when they trade quarterback Zach Wilson this offseason. The 31-year-old Uzomah sprained his MCL in Week 13 and finished the year on Injured Reserve. He's done very little to help the Jets since the 2022 season, catching only 29 passes on 39 targets for 290 yards and three touchdowns in 27 games.
