Recap from last week: We have been spoiled the last two weeks with superb fields for both the CJ CUP and ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. Congratulations to Patrick Cantlay who played outstanding golf, especially in rounds two and four where he scored 65s to win the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP with a final score of -23 – one stroke better than Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm.

Preview for this week: This week sees the PGA Tour leaving the United States to head east to Southampton Parish, Bermuda. The Bermuda Championship was first introduced to the PGA Tour last year and so we are only seeing this event for the second time. Brendon Todd is the only champion this tournament has seen as he beat out Harry Higgs a year ago to win by 4 strokes with a low score of -24.

Tournament purse: The purse for this year’s event is $4M – up from $3M last year, the winner takes home $720K in prize money and earns himself 500 FedEx Cup points.

Course and key stats: This year’s Bermuda Championship will again be played at the Port Royal Golf Course, it’s a par 71, only 6,842 yards in length, and the greens consist of none other than Bermudagrass. Some of the key stats to take into consideration are Strokes Gained: Approach, Strokes Gained: Par 4s (under 400 yards), Proximity Gained: 100-125 yards, Birdies or Better Gained, and Fairways Gained.

The field: We get a near full field back again this week with 132 players set to do battle, and the top 65 plus ties get the honor of playing the weekend rounds. On a scale ranging from A to D, I rank the field strength to be a D as most of the best players are taking a breather after playing the last two weeks, plus The Masters is just two weeks away so that’s where much of the focus for the golf community is right now.

Notable storylines: This will be the first PGA Tour event to allow fans to enjoy the action since the restart in June, but just 500 people per day will be allowed on the grounds of Port Royal Golf Course. This is the event that kick started Brendon Todd’s career season a year ago, he won here then went on to win his next tournament as well at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Will Zalatoris only needs three more FedEx Cup points to earn special temporary membership on the PGA Tour where he could then accept unlimited sponsor exemptions, so expect him to be very motivated this week to do well – he’s been top 10 in three of his previous four starts so there’s a good chance he gets those three points this week.

Some bold predictions:

  1. I’m going with Will Zalatoris to win this week, he’s been knocking on the door and I think the young buck breaks through in Bermuda.
  2. Adam Schenk continues his solid play and makes his 11th straight cut line.
  3. Justin Suh keeps his hot streak going to finish inside the top 5 for the first time ever in his young career.

Betting strategy this week: With a weak field on tap this week I would recommend going with more balanced lineups if you are only playing one or two, but beyond that, a stars and scrubs approach can work out well provided your scrubs do well – however, even the “stars” this week could be challenged to make the cut. The goal is always to get 5 or 6 players into the weekend to have a chance at placing in the money, and typically I have more luck with balanced lineups for accomplishing that goal.

All the best for earning some contest wins this week – here are my 15 DFS golf picks which feature my top 3 players from each tier on DraftKings (DK) in no particular order, plus I include player salaries for DK and FanDuel as well. I consistently provide recent and seasonal finishes for each of my picks, their performance at this event over the last 5 years (when available), and add in some helpful pieces of information as well.

The $10K+ Range

Brendon Todd (Salary: DraftKings – $11.1K, FanDuel – $11.9K) – I wouldn’t be surprised if last year’s champ is also this year’s champ as well since he likely has more win equity than any other player in the field at the moment. Todd has been a cut making machine lately too so even if he doesn’t win this week he will make the cut and has a good chance to finish top 10. Bermuda Championship finish in 2019: Won the tournament.

Will Zalatoris (Salary: DraftKings – $10.9K, FanDuel – $11.8K) – It seems pretty crazy to see Zalatoris as the second most expensive option this week, but given the weak field and the fact that he has 3 top 8’s in his last 4 starts, one of which was the U.S. Open, you can see why. He’s also coming off his best finish yet on the PGA Tour at the Shriners where he finished T5.

Harold Varner III (Salary: DraftKings – $10.7K, FanDuel – $11.5K) – Varner is perhaps the best ball striker in the field this week and has made 4 out of his past 5 cuts, all of those were inside the top 29 and he was T7 at the Wyndham Championship four starts ago. He’s also coming off a T13 at the Shriners thanks to his opening round of 63.

The $9K Range

Kristoffer Ventura (Salary: DraftKings – $9.1K, FanDuel – $10.3K) – I have loved rostering Ventura over the past couple of months as he has 5 top 21’s over his past 9 starts, and more recently, he has a T6 and a T7 over his past 4 starts. He’s got the distance and the quality putting to succeed on any given week, and I really like him at his price points this week. He made the cut here last year and after the start in Bermuda he missed 6 straight cuts plus missed the one prior so this island course must resonate with him. He’s in way better form this year and I can see a high finish coming for him on Sunday. Bermuda Championship finish in 2019: T41.

Peter Malnati (Salary: DraftKings – $9.0K, FanDuel – $10.2K) – Malnati has been flying high over his past two starts with a runner up finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship and a T5 in his most recent start at the Shriners. He also has just missed one cut over his past six tournaments and I think he will keep the momentum going this week for another strong finish.

Charley Hoffman (Salary: DraftKings – $9.7K, FanDuel – $10.4K) – Hoffman had made four straight cuts prior to his last start at the Shriners where he missed the cut by a mile, but he did have a T6, a T13, and a T14 in those four tournaments.

The $8K Range

Justin Suh (Salary: DraftKings – $8.7K, FanDuel – $9.9K) – Suh has now made three straight cuts and the finishes keep getting better with each start – a T21, a T14, and a T8 in his most recent event which was the Shriners where he was consistent with a 68-65-66-67 scorecard. The talented young player is starting to earn my respect and should be on your radar this week as he seeks out permanent status on the PGA Tour.

Adam Schenk (Salary: DraftKings – $8.1K, FanDuel – $10.1K) – I have really enjoyed using Schenk as a value play week after week as he just keeps making cuts and does have a few finishes inside the top 30 as well. He has now made 10 straight cuts which is one of the best streaks by any player on the PGA Tour. He’s a tad more expensive this week than we are used to seeing but he’s earned it, especially in this inferior field.

Scott Piercy (Salary: DraftKings – $8.5K, FanDuel – $11.0K) – I’m not a huge fan of the $8K range on DK this week and finding a third player to write about was challenging but I settled on Piercy. He has made 4 out his past 5 cuts and is coming off a T19 at the Shriners.

The $7K Range

Stewart Cink (Salary: DraftKings – $7.9K, FanDuel – $10.5K) – Cink has only missed 3 cuts over the span of his last 18 starts and actually won the Safeway Open just three starts ago. He followed up his win with a T12 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and was looking sound at the Shriners until he shot an 81 in round 4. The 47 year old should have a pretty good finish this week and comes in at a good price on DK.

Anirban Lahiri (Salary: DraftKings – $7.4K, FanDuel – $8.9K) – I barely ever use Lahiri in my lineups but will take a look at him this week since he has 3 straight top 37’s and was T6 two starts ago in the Dominican Republic.

Cameron Percy (Salary: DraftKings – $7.0K, FanDuel – $8.7K) – Percy has made three straight cut lines and was T8 two starts ago in the Dominican Republic. He also has course experience as he played here last year so that should work to his benefit this week. Bermuda Championship finish in 2019: T48.

The $6K Range

Beau Hossler (Salary: DraftKings – $6.9K, FanDuel – $8.7K) – Hossler has missed just one cut in his past 7 starts which makes him a pretty good buy low candidate this week. Bermuda Championship finish in 2019: T24.

Michael Gligic (Salary: DraftKings – $6.5K, FanDuel – $8.3K) – Much like Hossler above, Gligic has only missed one cut over his past 7 tournaments and 5 of them were inside the top 37. Bermuda Championship finish in 2019: T53.

Vincent Whaley (Salary: DraftKings – $6.8K, FanDuel – $8.5K) – I was quite challenged to come up with a third player in the $6K range on DK but went for Whaley who has made four cuts in a row and three of them were top 37’s.
