Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 9 Pickups & Advice

Dynasty Waiver Wire

The trade deadline in the NFL and in our fantasy leagues can be really hard to navigate. The changing landscape of the NFL can take a player who was left for dead, like Kenyan Drake, and make him fantasy viable again. Trade deadlines in our dynasty leagues can be an opportunity to load up for the stretch run. Something I recommend doing this week is checking in with the teams who are in the opposite position you are in. If a team is at the bottom of the standings, don’t be afraid to ask for their best veteran and shop your 2020 first-round rookie draft pick. If a team is at the top of the standings and you are towards the bottom, feel free to shop some veterans who may not have much-staying power in the NFL. Making these moves, whether a contender or building team, can improve the short-term and long-term outlook for your team.

Waiver Wire Tip: This is a slim week It is important to go for quality and not quantity.

BYE Weeks: BENGALS, FALCONS, RAMS, SAINTS

Quarterback

  1. Matt Schaub
  2. Brandon Allen – Drew Lock

There is a possibility Matt Ryan returns after the bye week, but if he doesn’t, Schaub is still an excellent play. The weapons for the Falcons are enough to make any quarterback a viable weekly streamer.

With Joe Flacco out for the week, you would expect rookie quarterback Drew Lock to get his first start. Instead, the Broncos are starting former Rams quarterback, Brandon Allen (insert rolling eyes emoji HERE).  The better pick-up at this point would be Drew Lock. If Flacco’s injury costs him the season there is no reason for the Broncos to not turn to Lock for the remainder of the season to evaluate his progression and if they want to go in a different direction this offseason.

Running Back

  1. Trey Edmunds
  2. Tra Carson
  3. Raheem Mostert

Benny Snell left Monday’s game against the Dolphins with a knee injury, James Conner left the game with an undisclosed injury and Jaylen Samuels is still multiple weeks away from returning to the lineup. The Steelers are down to Edmunds and maybe someone signed off the street is Conner is unable to come back. Edmunds is team “big running back” with a BMI over 30 and has good speed for someone his size. Edmunds should not be an afterthought for your waiver claims.

Last week Ty Johnson was the waiver addition people were willing to dump their FAAB for. After watching the Detroit Lions player in Week 8, Carson maybe the ball carrier to own. After being in Detroit for only a couple of days, Carson was the leading ball carrier for the Lions on limited snaps. Moving forward, as Carson becomes more familiar with the system and the team, he may be the leading ball carrier and become more involved in the receiving game.

Both Matt Breida and Jeffrey Wilson left Week 8 with injuries. The “next man up” for the 49ers would be Raheem Mostert. Why do we want the 49ers second string running back? Tevin Coleman is no picture of health and the 49ers have more rush attempts than any other team in the NFL. Also, the 49ers have the third-best adjusted line yards according to Football Outsiders.

Wide Receiver

  1. Josh Reynolds
  2. Breshad Perriman

With Brandin Cooks out of the lineup with a concussion, Reynolds saw his playing time immediately increase to above 80%. Similar to 2018 when Cooper Kupp missed time, Reynolds has the ability to immediately step in for any of the Rams wide receivers and will likely be an immediate producer.

The Buccaneers currently have two top-10 wide receivers and it is hard to imagine them adding more. However, O.J. Howard is not being involved in the passing game and their running backs are not explosive. Perriman, the former first-round draft pick, immediately adds another downfield threat and could be a dynamic wrinkle to the offense.

Tight End

  1. Foster Moreau
  2. Darren Fells

The Raiders are changing up their philosophy and are playing with more two tight ends on the field. Moreau is the second tight end for the Raiders and has been seeing his snap share increase every week. In fact, Moreau has the 11th highest per game average of his position since Week 4 of 2019.  It would take a deeper league or tight end premium format to consider Moreau as a viable pickup.

With Will Fuller out and Deshaun Watson still not on the same page with his other playmakers, Fells looks to be the beneficiary. Finishing Week 8 with six targets and two touchdowns, Fells has weekly touchdown and volume upside.
