Astros Sign Brailyn Marquez To Minor-League Deal

The Houston Astros signed free-agent left-hander Brailyn Marquez to a minor-league deal. Once one of the Chicago Cubs' top pitching prospects, Marquez ended up missing two years due to shoulder surgery. The 24-year-old southpaw returned in 2023 in the minors and went 1-1 with a 5.87 ERA and 1.92 WHIP while walking 38 and striking out 44 in 30 2/3 innings over 23 appearances (two starts) in four minor-league levels while making it all the way up to Double-A Tennessee. The Dominican hurler will need to stay healthy and will be looking to improve upon his numbers on the farm for Houston in 2024. Marquez is a name to keep an eye on if he returns to his pre-injury form.

Brailyn Marquez Undergoes Surgery

Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Brailyn Marquez (shoulder) underwent surgical debridement surgery on his left shoulder last month and is out for rest of the season. The big lefty was once the Cubs top pitching prospect, but injuries have limited him to just one appearance since September of 2020. Marquez, 23, still has to prove his value to the organization, but he needs to show health first and foremost. When healthy, Marquez has been one of the top left-handed arms in the minor leagues, but for now, he remains an option worth monitoring in only dynasty leagues.

Brailyn Marquez Behind In Camp

Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Brailyn Marquez remains behind the rest of the team's arms in spring training after his delayed start to camp, but he has been working through a throwing program, according to manager David Ross. Marquez is ranked by MLB Pipeline as baseball's No. 63 prospect and as Chicago's top prospect. The 22-year-old left-hander allowed five runs on two hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning in his major league debut last year against the White Sox. But the southpaw can reach triple digits with his fastball and could be a future front-line starter if he can somehow learn to repeat his three-quarters delivery. Given Chicago's lack of velocity in their starting rotation, there's certainly a chance that we see Marquez make his first big league start in 2021.

Brailyn Marquez Included In Team's Player Pool

Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Brailyn Marquez, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was included in the team's initial player pool for the upcoming 2020 season. Outfielder Brennen Davis (No. 3) and catching prospect Miguel Amaya (No. 4) are also on the list of camp invites. Marquez's 6-foot-4, 185-pound frame can make it hard for him to repeat his delivery, but the southpaw made strides with his command last year in the minors, cutting his walk rate to 5.8 per nine innings to 1.9. The 21-year-old has the potential to be a front-liner starter in the majors. He went 9-5 with a 3.13 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 11.1 K/9 in 22 starts for Single-A South Bend and High-A Myrtle Beach last year. Marquez has lots of upside, but don't expect him to pitch for the Cubs in 2020.
