Bryan Mitchell Cut By Padres

The San Diego Padres designated starter Bryan Mitchell for assignment in their final round of transactions before Opening Day. The Friars acquired Mitchell last season via trade but he quickly fell out of favor with a horrendous 5.42 ERA and major control issues. Given an opportunity to regain a starting job this spring, Mitchell was unable to capitalize. Hell still make $910,000 this season wherever he ends up, but its likely the Mitchell era in San Diego is over. Other notable players designated for assignment were infielders Luis Urias, Ty France and Jose Pirela.

Padres Settle With Bryan Mitchell

The San Diego Padres avoided salary arbitration with starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $910,000 deal. Mitchell was a bust in his first year in San Diego, going 2-4 with a 5.42 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and ugly 4.7 K/9 over 16 outings (11 starts) for the Friars. He'll have a chance to compete for a rotation spot in spring training, but he has very little fantasy value.

Bryan Mitchell's Starting Hopes Stay Alive

San Diego Padres starter Bryan Mitchell turned in a brilliant performance Monday, recording 8 2/3 shutout innings in a victory against the San Francisco Giants. Entering the game with a 6.16 ERA in 15 appearances (10 starts), this came out of nowhere. The righty surrendered seven hits and three walks in the contest while striking out seven. At risk of being left out of the Padres 2019 40-man roster, Mitchells September (2.19 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) has probably earned him another shot at cracking the rotation next year. Hell have one more opportunity in the season finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Wildly inconsistent, he shouldnt be a trusted streamer nor on fantasy radars going into the offseason.

Bryan Mitchell Returns To Rotation Monday

San Diego Padres starter Bryan Mitchell (elbow) will return to the rotation Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mitchells missed nearly three months due to an elbow impingement and was activated from the disabled list on September 1. Prior to the injury, Mitchell was awful across 12 appearances (seven starts), with a 7.08 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 0.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. It makes sense for the rebuilding Padres to see what Mitchell has to offer but fantasy owners should steer clear.

Bryan Mitchell Lands On Disabled List

San Diego Padres reliever Bryan Mitchell was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with an elbow impingement. An MRI revealed elbow tendonitis and swelling in his forearm but no ligament damage. The Padres expect Mitchell to rest for a few days then resume baseball activities once he rejoins the team in Arlington when the Padres visit the Texas Rangers. Mitchell has been a disaster this season with a 7.08 ERA and 2.03 WHIP. He was demoted from the starting rotation in early May but hasn't performed any better from the bullpen. It's possible the Padres keep him on the shelf indefinitely.

Bryan Mitchell Demoted To Bullpen

The San Diego Padres announced Monday that starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell will move from the starting rotation to the bullpen. The demotion was expected after manager Andy Green called out Mitchell to improve his performance twice over the last week. Mitchell has been a disaster for the Padres, posting a 6.47 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 0.62 K/BB over seven starts. Mitchell is out of options, so sending him to Triple-A would've risked him being claimed by another team. Pitcher Jordan Lyles will take Mitchell's place in the rotation and is scheduled to start May 10 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lyles has posted a 3.66 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 13 appearances this season. For his career, he has started 107 games and holds a 5.38 ERA through eight seasons. Lyles is not a fantasy option until proven otherwise.

Bryan Mitchell Is On The Clock

San Diego Padres manager Andy Green called out starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell after he suffered his third loss Sunday against the New York Mets. After being roughed up for five hits, four walks and four earned runs in four and 2/3 innings, Green challenged Mitchell to stand up to his potential. In six starts, Mitchell holds a 6.07 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and lopsided 0.61 K/BB. With a 16.50 ERA in the first inning, Mitchell has given the Padres almost no chance to win in his outings. Mitchell, who was traded to San Diego with Chase Headley this offseason, won a starting spot early on but the leash is rapidly shortening. While Mitchell offers no fantasy appeal, a possible replacement is 23-year-old prospect Brett Kennedy who is 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA through 28 innings in Triple-A El Paso. The Padres could also go with long-reliever Robbie Erlin if Mitchell loses his starting job.

Bryan Mitchell Posts First Quality Start

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell took a no-decision Tuesday, giving up three earned runs in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mitchell achieved the bare minimum for the quality start, allowing five hits, three walks and striking out four. Mitchell has been wildly inefficient en route to a 5.03 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. He's had a rough go in his first full season with only a 3.2 K/9 and is a league leader in hard contact allowed. Out of options, Mitchell will be a Padre indefinitely but with his 0 percent ownership, he'll continue being a fantasy non-factor.

Bryan Mitchell Scratched From Saturday Start

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell was scheduled to start against the Diamondbacks on Saturday, but was scratched shortly before first pitch due to neck stiffness. Manager Andy Green downplayed the injury after the game, saying that Mitchell should be back on the mound in a couple of days. This spring, Mitchell has made three starts, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over eight innings while posting a 6.8 K/9. A spot in the rotation has been guaranteed for Mitchell since early in Spring Training, so this injury should not have an effect on what little fantasy value he currently has.

Bryan Mitchell Comfortable As A Starter

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell will open 2018 as the team's No. 2starter. Mitchell, acquired with third baseman Chase Headley during the offseason, was believed to be San Diego's real target in the transaction. At 26, Mitchell hasn't shown he belongs in the majors (4.94 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 5.86 K/9 through 98 1/3 innings), but his ERA as a starter (3.76) is markedly better than from the 'pen (5.77). As important, Mitchell is out of options, so he's here to stay. His mid-90s heater is mixed with a cutter and curveball, but pitch values thus far in his career have been poor. Pending health, Mitchell should have all he can eat this season in terms of innings, but at a 493 ADP, owners would be prudent to wait on positive results.
