David Paulino allowed three runs in 5 1/3 inning pitches in the Astros 12-9 win on Thursday. With Lance McCullers expected to return this weekend and top prospect Francis Martes now up with the team, Paulion may soon be the odd man out in the rotation. Paulino has won his last two starts but may be more valuable to the team in the bullpen. He has 26 strikeouts in 25 innings this season but his ERA still is hovering over five at 5.04. Paulino's imminent future appears to be destined for the bullpen and will lose fantasy value once McCullers returns.
Houston Astros starting pitcher David Paulino will take the mound and make his second start of the season for the Astros on Tuesday. Paulino is pitching in place of starter Joe Musgrove, who has been on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. In his May 31 start against the Twins, Paulino threw 89 pitches and struck out eight batters in four innings. While the strikeout totals are impressive, Paulino could be restricted by the pitch count again Tuesday against the Royals. Paulino should be viewed as a stop-gap option for Houston right now in their starting rotation.
Joe Musgrove Will Not Start On Tuesday, David Paulino Gets The Nod
Houston Astros starting pitcher Joe Musgrove (shoulder) played catch today for the first time since going on the disabled list Monday but will not be able to pitch tomorrow against the Royals. Musgrove's new goal is to throw a bullpen on Thursday and hopefully will be able to make his next start. Pitcher David Paulino will start against Kansas City tomorrow, and he had eight strikeouts in four innings against the Twins on May 31. This season, Musgrove is 4-4 with a 4.89 ERA in 10 starts, posting 43 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. His best start of the season was seven shutout innings against the Orioles on May 26, right before going on the DL, and that promise makes him a decent streaming option.
Houston Astros starting pitcher David Paulino pitched four innings, striking out eight and allowing two runs in his first start of the season Wednesday. Paulino was called up after the Astros placed pitcher Joe Musgrove on the disabled list with shoulder discomfort. Paulino is regarded as one of the top prospects in Houston's farm system and should receive another start if Musgrove isn't ready to return. The Astros also have starters Collin McHugh and Charlie Morton on the DL, so there will be space to give Paulino more opportunities. Paulino was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts at Triple-A.
