New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu (hip) is encouraged about how his hip is feeling and expects to start doing baseball activities over the next few days to try and put himself in a position to be ready for the American League Division Series. The Yankees won the American League East division on Thursday evening and will now have a bye for the wild-card round of the postseason, giving LeMahieu some extra time to heal. "I don't know if they'll use me or not, but I'm definitely gonna try to be available," LeMahieu said. The 36-year-old veteran infielder hasn't played since early September due to a right-hip impingement and could be left off the playoff roster even if he's ready to go by the start of the ALDS. LeMahieu has battled injuries during a frustrating 2024 season and has hit just .204 (41-for-201) with two homers and 26 RBI.
The New York Yankees placed infielder DJ LeMahieu (hip) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 6) on Monday with a right-hip impingement and recalled outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. It was time for the Yankees to make the move since LeMahieu hadn't played for the team since last Tuesday. The 36-year-old veteran had picked up hits in each of his previous five games before getting hurt, but he's still hitting just .204/.269/.259 with a .527 OPS, two home runs, 26 RBI and 19 runs scored in only 201 at-bats on the year for the Yanks. LeMahieu hasn't been very healthy in 2024 and hasn't delivered when he's been on the field. When he returns from the IL, he'll be a bench player for the Yankees to close out the year and in the postseason with Jazz Chisholm Jr. entrenched at third base.

The 36-year-old didn't play on Saturday but was cleared from the league's concussion protocol, allowing him to return on Sunday. The matchup against Gomber is a nice one, but it's hard to recommend LeMahieu to any DFS gamers the way he's been hitting this year, especially at the bottom of the lineup. He has only had 185 at-bats in 2024 and is batting just .189/.263/.249 with two homers, 24 RBI and 16 runs scored. LeMahieu is getting the nod at first with rookie Ben Rice sitting against the southpaw.

It's been a pretty dismal year for LeMahieu, as he's hitting just .189 (35-for-185) with two homers and 24 RBI, and the return of Chisholm doesn't bode well for his playing time going forward.

LeMahieu suffered injuries to both his neck and pinkie finger in Wednesday's contest against the Tampa Bay Rays and was held out on Thursday as a precaution. The 35-year-old veteran is back in there a day later, though, after a CT scan of his neck came back clean. He got a late start to the 2024 due to injury and is batting just .202 (22-for-109) and has yet to hit a home run, but he's been a bit better in July with a .250/.333/.292 slash line, a double and two RBI. LeMahieu isn't any kind of exciting sleeper option for DFS lineups, but in the leadoff spot he could do some damage.

LeMahieu will get the day off after starting in each of the team's last five games. The 35-year-old got a late start to the 2024 season due to an injury and he hasn't yet found a groove at the plate with the Yankees. In his first 92 at-bats, LeMahieu has only 17 hits (.185 average) with no home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored. The three-time All-Star has never really hit for power in his career -- he had a career-high 26 homers in 2019 -- and his batting average has fallen every year since he won a batting title in 2020. Cabrera brings little DFS appeal with a .234 average, five homers and 26 RBI on the year.

Fantasy managers won't complain to have LeMahieu back as infield depth, but a permanent move to the bottom of New York's batting order will limit his counting-stat upside tremendously. The three-time All-Star is trying to bounce back from last year, when he hit .243/.327/.390 with 15 homers and 44 RBI in 136 games.
