The Detroit Tigers designated catcher Dustin Garneau for assignment on Monday in a move to get down to a 26-man roster. Garneau hit .300 with a .364 on-base percentage in 11 plate appearances for the Tigers this season after batting .210 with a .250 on-base percentage and six home runs in 68 plate appearances for the club during the 2021 season. Detroit was carrying three catchers on the active roster but will now move forward with Tucker Barnhart and Eric Haase as options behind the plate at the Major League level.
Detroit Tigers catcher Dustin Garneau went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. It was his second home run in as many games and his fifth home run over just eight games this month. The 34-year-old journeyman was called up by the Tigers from Triple-A in mid-August. He has been sharing catching duties with Eric Haase lately, but he's been in the lineup more often than not as Haase has also been getting starts in the outfield. Over 15 total games in the majors this year, Garneau is slashing .261/.286/.739. Based on his .208/.288/.376 career slash line, we're likely just seeing a bit of a hot streak from him. He's not someone fantasy managers should prioritize off the waiver wire.
The Los Angeles Angels have signed catcher Dustin Garneau to a minor league contract. Garneau joins Jose Briceno and Kevan Smith as the only catchers on LA's 40-man roster. Garneau, a product of nearby Cal-State Fullerton, has played in parts of each of the last four big league seasons. He went just 1-for-2 last season, and has an uphill battle to win a big role with the Angels next season. He is not fantasy relevant at this point.
The Chicago White Sox have claimed catcher Dustin Garneau off waivers from the Oakland Athletics on Friday in wake of the Welington Castillo performance-enhancing drug suspension news. Garneau, 30, was a 19th-round draft pick of the Rockies back in 2009. Garneau will serve as organizational depth at catcher for the White Sox going forward. He is a career .192 hitter over 82 games played in parts of three different seasons. Garneau can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats for now.
