Tanner Houck In Line To Start On Friday

Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck (arm) is currently in line to start on Friday against the division-rival New York Yankees. When asked exactly why Houck hasn't really rebounded from his last start, manager Alex Cora said it's basically a case of dead-arm. It' good news, as Boston is going to need Houck healthy down the stretch if they are going to make a push for the final wild-card spot in the American League. The 28-year-old has not looked as good in the second half of the season for the BoSox, going 0-4 with a 4.78 ERA, 38 strikeouts and 21 walks in 52 2/3 innings over nine starts. The Red Sox and fantasy managers will be hoping he can bounce back after some extra time off this weekend, but it's a tough matchup that will make him a dice roll in fantasy lineups. On the year, Houck still has a decent 3.24 ERA, but his strikeout rate is also a career-low 21.1%.

Osvaldo Bido • RP • Athletics

Osvaldo Bido Placed On 15-Day Injured List

The Oakland Athletics placed right-hander Osvaldo Bido (wrist) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 8) on Tuesday with right-wrist flexor tendinitis and recalled left-hander Brady Basso and first baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda from Triple-A Las Vegas in corresponding moves. Infielder Tristan Gray was also optioned to Vegas. With Bido going to the shelf, left-hander JP Sears took his turn in the starting rotation to face the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday. With just several weeks left in the season, it remains to be seen if the 28-year-old Bido will be able to make any more starts for the A's in 2024. He's been a nice find for fantasy managers in deeper leagues and has pitched well in his first year in Oakland, going 5-3 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 26 walks in his 16 outings (nine starts) covering 63 1/3 innings.

Ben Lively • SP • Guardians

Ben Lively Injures His Thigh

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Ben Lively (thigh) exited his start early on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field due to a right-thigh bruise. Lively hit the deck after taking a comebacker off the bat of outfielder Dominic Fletcher to his thigh. He was helped off the field and removed from the contest. Fantasy managers that were streaming Lively in an excellent matchup have to be disappointed about his early exit. Before being helped off the diamond, he tossed two scoreless frames while allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two. At the very least, the 32-year-old will be questionable to make his next start, and he could also land on the 15-day injured list, which would put him at risk of missing the rest of the regular season as the Guardians try to clinch the American League Central.

Jacob deGrom • SP • Rangers

Jacob deGrom Will Start On Friday For Rangers

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (elbow) will make his 2024 season debut on Friday and the two-time Cy Young winner will draw a very favorable matchup against the Mariners, although it comes on the road in Seattle. The Mariners have the lowest team batting average in all of baseball and they also have the highest strikeout rate per game (10.15). deGrom is making his way back from Tommy John surgery and hasn't pitched in the majors since April of 2023, but he made four rehab appearances in which he was his usual dominant self. The four-time All-Star threw a total of 10 2/3 inning, allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out 15. Four innings was the most he threw in any one of his rehab starts, so he may be somewhat limited in his return, but he'll offer fantasy managers a chance for good strikeout numbers, low ERA, and low WHIP during the fantasy playoffs, so he should be rostered wherever he's still available.

Reynaldo López • SP • Braves

Reynaldo Lopez Removed Due To Shoulder Tightness

The Atlanta Braves were forced to pull right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) from his start early on Tuesday night against the division-rival Washington Nationals at Nationals Park due to right-shoulder tightness. Lopez only made it through one inning and gave up one hit in a scoreless frame while walking none and striking out one before giving way to veteran reliever Jesse Chavez. The Braves were quick to give the 30-year-old the hook when they noticed his velocity was down right from the beginning. Lopez has been great in a move to a full-time starting role in his first year in Atlanta in 2024, but he's gone over 100 innings in the big leagues for the first time since 2019, and it appears his elevated workload could finally be catching up to him. At this point, depending on the severity of his shoulder injury, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Braves play it safe and move him to the bullpen as they battle for a playoff spot.

Kyle Schwarber • DH • Phillies

Kyle Schwarber Leaves Tuesday's Game With Elbow Discomfort

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder/designated hitter Kyle Schwarber (elbow) left Tuesday's contest early against the Tampa Bay Rays at Citizens Bank Park with left-elbow discomfort, according to the Phillies. Schwarber appeared to injure his elbow when sliding back into first base on a pickoff attempt by the Rays catcher. He did damage at the plate before departing, though, going 1-for-1 with his 35th homer of the season (a solo shot) while also scoring a run and walking once. He was replaced at DH by bench player Buddy Kennedy. Expect the 31-year-old slugger to undergo testing after the game, so we won't know his status moving forward until then. Hopefully, it's just a day-to-day thing and not a serious injury. If it is serious, it could jeopardize Schwarber's available for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs. Both Kody Clemens and Weston Wilson could see more at-bats if Schwarber misses time.

Yimi García • RP • Mariners

Yimi Garcia's Season Over After Moving To 60-Day Injured List

The Seattle Mariners moved right-handed reliever Yimi Garcia (elbow) to the 60-day injured list on Tuesday due to right-elbow inflammation, which will put him out for the rest of the 2024 season. In other moves, the M's also placed right-handed starter Luis Castillo (hamstring) on the 15-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 9) with a left-hamstring strain and selected the contract of catcher Seby Zavala from Triple-A Tacoma. The 34-year-old Garcia recently had a setback with his elbow injury and won't pitch again for the team this year. The Dominican hurler began the year pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had all five of his saves in 2024, before being traded to Seattle at the deadline in late July. Garcia only pitched in nine innings out of the bullpen after the trade and allowed six earned runs while walking four and striking out seven.

Victor Robles Back In Action On Tuesday Night

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles (elbow) is starting in right field and is batting leadoff for the M's at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday night against the visiting San Diego Padres and right-hander Yu Darvish for the start of a new series. Robles was hit by a pitch on his elbow last Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals and then missed the final two games of the series. After a scheduled day off on Monday, the 27-year-old is back in action and will be looking for his first career hit against Darvish, who he has faced five times before. The Dominican outfielder has been an offensive spark for Seattle since being acquired in a deadline trade from the Washington Nationals at the end of July. In his 61 games with Seattle, Robles has hit .307/.369/.449 with an .818 OPS, four homers, 13 doubles, 19 RBI and 19 steals in 199 plate appearances.

Jonathan India Returns To Reds Lineup

Cincinnati Reds infielder Jonathan India (elbow) is back at second base and batting leadoff for the Reds on Tuesday versus the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Andre Pallante at Busch Stadium. India was pulled from Sunday's contest against the Atlanta Braves due to discomfort in his left elbow and missed Monday's series finale as a result, but he'll return to action to start a new series in St. Louis. The 27-year-old former fifth overall pick in 2018 out of Florida has gone hitless in his last four games and is batting .217 (5-for-23) so far in seven games in the month of September with a homer, double, two RBI, five walks, and eight strikeouts. India has produced modest power/speed numbers for fantasy managers in his fourth season in the big leagues with 14 homers, 12 stolen bases, 53 RBI and a .244/.348/.390 slash line in his 134 contests.

Masyn Winn • SS • Cardinals

Masyn Winn Resting Against Reds

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn is taking the day off on Tuesday at Busch Stadium against the division-rival Cincinnati Reds. In his place, rookie infielder Thomas Saggese will make his MLB debut at shortstop and bat seventh against Reds rookie right-hander Rhett Lowder. Second baseman Brendan Donovan is also hitting in Winn's typical leadoff spot for the Cardinals. This will be Winn's first day off since Aug. 12. It seems like the right time to give him a breather after starting the month of September going 4-for-32 (.125) with two RBI and nine strikeouts in seven games played. Winn has had a productive first year as the everyday shortstop in St. Louis, slashing .273/.320/.408 with a .728 OPS, 12 homers, 49 RBI and 10 steals in 134 games. Donovan has been swinging a hot bat so far in September and deserves a look as a DFS sleeper out of the leadoff spot against a rookie hurler.

Will Smith Takes A Seat On Tuesday

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith is out of the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs. This looks like a rest game for Smith after he went hitless with two strikeouts during Monday's game. In his place, Austin Barnes will do the catching and bat ninth versus left-hander Shota Imanaga. Barnes is a fine backup catcher with a .262 batting average over 49 games this season. However, he doesn't offer much pop with the bat and has a tough matchup here, so fantasy managers should look elsewhere for a streaming option on Tuesday.

Teoscar Hernandez Remains Out

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez (ankle) remains out of the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs. This marks the fourth game in a row that Hernandez has missed after getting hit by a pitch on the ankle last Friday. The Dodgers haven't placed Hernandez on the injured list yet, but that news could be coming. For now, fantasy managers can consider Hernandez as day-to-day, but they should get a backup plan prepared. Andy Pages will cover left field and bat fifth against left-hander Shota Imanaga. The 23-year-old has been decent with a .243 batting average with 10 home runs and 39 RBI in 104 games this season. However, Pages isn't an ideal fantasy option against a tough southpaw in Imanaga.

Luis Castillo Goes To Injured List

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo (hamstring) has been placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. Ugh, this news comes after Castillo left early during Sunday's game due to a hamstring issue. After undergoing further testing it was determined that Castillo suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain. At this point in the season it's uncertain if Castillo will take the mound again in 2024. He was pitching well with a 3.64 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 175 strikeouts over 175 1/3 innings of work this season. The Mariners haven't announced who is going to take over in the starting rotation. Regardless, most fantasy managers can move on from Castillo with the playoffs starting in most formats.

Lawrence Butler Out On Tuesday

Oakland Athletics outfielder Lawrence Butler (illness) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Houston Astros. It sounds like Butler caught an illness that is going around the clubhouse. A's manager Mark Kotsay said he's hopeful that Butler can return on Wednesday. In the meantime, Seth Brown will cover right field and bat fifth versus right-hander Spencer Arrighetti. Brown could be a low-risk DFS option with a .248 batting average and 14 home runs on the season. The left-handed slugger could have some success against Arrighetti on Tuesday.

Joey Loperfido Back In The Lineup

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Joey Loperfido is back in the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the New York Mets. The rookie slugger sat out on Monday, which appears to have been a routine rest game. He'll return to the lineup on Tuesday, but he'll face left-hander David Peterson. Loperfido has limited playing time against left-handed pitching this season. He's hitting 6-for-33 with one home run against the southpaw during his time in the majors. Loperfido won't be an ideal DFS option for Tuesday, but fantasy managers in season long formats can get him back in their lineups.

Nolan Jones Heading To The Bench

Colorado Rockies outfielder Nolan Jones is absent from Tuesday's starting lineup against the Detroit Tigers. It's a bit odd to see Jones sitting out against a right-handed starting pitcher. It has been a disappointing year for Jones who is hitting .212 with three home runs in 65 games this season. It's worth noting that Jones has picked it up with the bat over the last few weeks. This appears to be a routine rest day, so Jones should be back in the lineup after this game. Jordan Beck will cover right field and bat ninth against right-hander Keider Montero. Beck has a ton of potential, but he's off to a slow start at the plate during his rookie season.

Spencer Torkelson Scratched On Tuesday

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson (illness) has been scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Torkelson is one of a few players that are battling a minor illness on the Tigers roster. This isn't something that should sideline Torkelson for more than a few days. In his place, Andy Ibanez will cover first base and bat sixth versus right-hander Bradley Blalock. Ibanez has quietly put together a decent season as a reserve player. He's hitting .259 with five home runs and 30 RBI in 84 games. He figures to get more playing time while the Tigers are down a few players.

Angels Place Ben Joyce On 15-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Angels placed right-handed reliever Ben Joyce (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sep. 7) on Tuesday and recalled right-hander Guillo Zuniga from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. The Angels also moved left-hander Matt Moore (forearm) to the 60-day IL. With only a few weeks in the 2024 regular season and with the Halos well out of playoff contention, it would be a surprise if the hard-throwing Joyce returns to the big leagues the rest of the way. The former third-rounder in 2022 out of Tennessee was looking good in his second year in the majors in 2024, going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, 33 strikeouts and his first four career saves in 34 2/3 innings pitched. With Joyce now on the shelf, the Angels could employ a committee approach to saves to finish the year among the likes of Hunter Strickland, Roansy Contreras and Jose Quijada.

Anthony Rendon • 3B • Angels

Anthony Rendon Lands On Injured List Yet Again

The Los Angeles Angels placed third baseman Anthony Rendon (oblique) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 8) on Tuesday with a left-oblique strain and selected the contract of infielder Eric Wagaman from the minors in a corresponding move. Rendon had missed the last two games due to what was reported as back soreness, but the 34-year-old veteran will officially hit the IL with an oblique injury and will most likely be done for the rest of the 2024 season. Rendon has been one of the franchise's biggest free-agent busts since he joined the team in 2020 and just hasn't been able to stay healthy for a long stretch of time. He's played in just 57 games in 2024 and has hit a weak .218/.307/.267 with a career-worst .574 OPS, no home runs, 14 RBI and six steals. Rendon has fallen completely off the radar in all mixed fantasy leagues heading into next year.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Playing On Tuesday

After an injury scare on Monday in which Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (toe) went for mid-game X-rays at Rogers Centre after fouling a ball off his left toe, he's back at first base on Tuesday and is hitting third against the visiting New York Mets and left-hander David Peterson. Obviously, X-rays came back negative, and the four-time All-Star slugger is back in there to face a left-handed hurler in the second game of the series. The 25-year-old has been Toronto's most consistent hitter all season long and needs to remain in all starting fantasy lineups. He has gone hitless in his last two contests, but Vladdy is still hitting .280 (7-for-25) in six games so far in September with a homer, two doubles and five RBI. Only six of his 28 long balls on the year have been against lefties, but he's also hit .327 (33-for-101) against them.
