Franklin Perez Resumes Throwing

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Franklin Perez (shoulder) has resumed his throwing program. The 24-year-old right-hander was once a highly regarded prospect and part of the Justin Verlander trade from 2017. Sadly, Perez has struggled to stay healthy and has not pitched since 2019. He underwent right shoulder surgery last May, but appears to be on the right track now. There is still plenty of upside for Perez, but it's unclear if the team plans to keep him as a starter or move him to a relief role. A shift to a shorter relief role could put Perez on a faster track to the big leagues. Regardless, Perez won't have relevance in fantasy formats right away.

Franklin Perez To Have Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

Detroit Tigers pitching prospect Franklin Perez (shoulder) is set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. The news is yet another blow to Perez, who has been plagued with both shoulder and lat injuries. Perez was the top prospect acquired by the Tigers in the 2017 trade that sent Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros. The 23-year-old has yet to complete a full year at any Minor league level due to the many injuries he's suffered. Tiger manager A.J. Hinch didn't offer a clear timeline for when Perez will be able to return, solely telling reporters that Perez "will be out awhile."

Franklin Perez Throws Scoreless Inning In Spring Debut

Detroit Tigers pitcher Franklin Perez made his first appearance this spring against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. He gave up one walk and no hits and didn't record a strikeout. The 23-year-old Perez was the Tigers' top prospect in 2018, but he's struggled with lat and shoulder injuries over the past few years and his minor league production when he's taken the mound has been disappointing. He once had a mid-90s fastball, but in Wednesday's outing, his fastball was clocked between 86 and 89 mph. He'll likely be starting the 2021 season at Double-A or Triple-A.

Franklin Perez Throwing In Camp

Detroit Tigers right-hander Franklin Perez (shoulder), the team's No. 14 prospect, threw his first formal bullpen session of spring training on Monday. Perez took things easy, but it was a good step for an injury-plagued youngster that has pitched in just nine minor league games since joining the team as part of the Justin Verlander trade in 2017. It's unknown if the Tigers plan to stretch Perez out during spring training games, but Detroit will keep their focus (for now) on just getting him into games eventually. The 22-year-old will obviously be handled with caution in camp, and if he cannot stay healthy as a starter, his long-term fate could be in the bullpen. For now, Perez is just a development prospect worth keeping an eye on in dynasty/keeper setups.

Franklin Perez Still Not Throwing

Detroit Tigers starting pitching prospect Franklin Perez (shoulder) still hasn't been able to throw a baseball after two-plus years of shoulder issues. The 22-year-old that was the key piece in the trade that sent Justin Verlander to Houston in 2017 has pitched in nine games in his two seasons with Detroit (27 innings). He hasn't thrown off a mound since going on the injured list in June. The good news is he hasn't had any surgeries and doesn't have any structural damage, but Perez still doesn't have a timetable for when he might throw again. Perez could easily be a candidate for Detroit's starting rotation if he was healthy, and he's ranked No. 6 among the team's prospects. Because it'll be a slow climb for him when he gets healthy, you can forget about stashing Perez for now in dynasty leagues.

Franklin Perez Returns To Action At Single-A

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Franklin Perez (shoulder) returned to action with High-A Lakeland on Tuesday and allowed three hits and an earned run while walking two and striking out three in 3 2/3 innings. In his first start off the injured list he threw 39 of his 62 pitches for strikes. The team's No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, is overshadowed because of his injury issues and by both Casey Mize and Matt Manning, but he's worth watching in dynasty/keeper leagues if he's able to stay healthy for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Franklin Perez To Miss 4-6 Weeks

Detroit Tigers pitching prospect Franklin Perez will miss four to six weeks with right shoulder tendinitis. Perez also missed time with a shoulder issue last year after being traded by the Houston Astros in 2017 as part of the Justin Verlander deal. Perez, whom MLB.com ranked the 78th best prospect for 2019, is only relevant in dynasty leagues but this is another unfortunate setback.

Tigers Shut Down Franklin Perez

Detroit Tigers pitching prospect Franklin Perez (shoulder) has been put on the disabled list with capsular inflammation in his right shoulder and won't pitch again this year. Director of player development David Littlefield said Perez is being shut down as a "precautionary measure to work on stability and strength." Perez was the centerpiece of the Justin Verlander deal, but he missed most of the first two months of the seasons with a lat injury. The team's No. 2 prospect struggled in the Gulf Coast League and at High-A Lakeland with a 6.52 overall ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

Franklin Perez Sidelined 12 Weeks

Detroit Tigers top prospect Franklin Perez, acquired in the Justin Verlander trade last season, will miss at least 12 weeks with a right lat strain after suffering the injury in a minor league contest on Sunday. Perez wasn't likely to spend any time at the big league level this year, but he showed serious promise last year as he split time between High-A and Double-A and went 6-3 with a 3.02 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings. There is no recommendation for surgery at this time for the 20-year-old hurler.
