The Chicago White Sox on Thursday announced that they will decline the 2018 option on catcher Geovany Sotos contract. Its not a surprise as Soto only played in 13 games before his season came to an end due to an elbow injury. Catchers Kevan Smith and Omar Narvaez showed promise in his abscence so it makes sense for the rebuilding White Sox to stick with younger options. Soto who is now 34 has played in just 39 games over the past two seasons and will likely end up with a minor league offer.
Chicago White Sox catcher Geovany Soto (elbow) has not been cleared for rehab but hopes to return this year. Soto has been out been since May 7th after having arthroscopic surgery. Even when healthy Soto does not offer much if any value to fantasy owners. Kevan Smith and Omar Narvaez will continue to share the catcher duties. Smith offers the more fantasy value of the two but isn't worth of much consideration.
After hitting the disabled list with an elbow injury, Chicago White Sox catcher Geovany Soto will have elbow surgery on his right arm and miss 12 weeks. He will have surgery for debridement and the removal of loose bodies in his right elbow, going on the 60-day DL and giving up his spot on the 40-man roster to infielder Gregory Infante. Soto has made only 48 plate appearances and batted .190/.271/.405 on the year before going down with an injury. Catcher Omar Narvaez will get the first shot as the starting catcher on the North Side and has a .253/.355/.310 batting line in 187 plate appearances as a big leaguer to date. Soto should not have been on any fantasy rosters, and Narvaez is far from an impact player for fantasy purposes either.
