Infielder Gordon Beckham announced in a tweet on Wednesday that he is officially retiring. The eighth overall pick by the Chicago White Sox in the 2008 draft, Beckham made his Major League debut in 2009 and logged 3782 plate appearances in the Majors. In addition to playing for the White Sox, he also suited up for the Los Angeles Angels, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, and Detroit Tigers in 11 Major League seasons. He hit .237 with a .300 on-base percentage, 80 home runs, and 35 stolen bases in his Major League career while seeing most of his playing time at second base and third base.

The San Diego Padres signed infielder Gordon Beckham to a minor league deal on Feb. 10 with an invitation to big league camp. The veteran 33-year-old appeared in 83 games for the Detroit Tigers last season, posting a modest .643 OPS across 240 plate appearances. It has never really clicked in the majors for the 2008 first-round pick, who owns a career 80 wRC+. Hell compete with infielders Ty France and Greg Garcia, among others, to provide depth, but is a long shot to make the team. Barring catastrophic injuries to the Padres infield, Beckham likely wont see significant time on the diamond this season.

The veteran infielder has been struggling with the bat this season and has seen his playing time getting reduced. Niko Goodrum will bat leadoff and play shortstop versus righty Mike Foltynewicz. Goodrum has not swung the bat well this season, but could be in for a good game on Friday versus Folty who has a 5.67 ERA.

Detroit Tigers infielders Gordon Beckham and Dawel Lugo are not in the lineup Friday as the team prepares for a weekend series against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Miguel Cabrera is playing first base, Josh Harrison returns to the lineup playing second base, and regulars Niko Goodrum and Ronny Rodriguez round out the infield. The Mets are starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard. Though Syndergaard has struggled this season, he remains dangerous, and Detroit's lineup is poor as well. Additionally, Citi Field is historically one of the worst parks in baseball for hitters. It all adds up to a fade of the entire Tigers roster for DFS purposes.

Although Detroit faces pitcher Jose Urena and his 4.44 ERA/4.67 xFIP, the top of this lineup is best faded in DFS. Beckham is hitting .242/.351/.500 with three home runs, but Goodrum is down to a .204/.303/.345 line with falling Statcast numbers as well, which will limit Beckham's chances at scoring.

Although Mercer has been the better hitter historically, neither has ever been a consistently league-average hitter, and so both lack much fantasy relevance in standard leagues. Beckham can be faded in DFS batting eighth, especially as his strong start is unlikely to continue.

Beckham was brought up from the minors to provide stability after the news broke that second baseman Robinson Cano would be suspended for 80 games. Beckham, the once prized prospect of the White Sox organization, has bounced around the league the past few seasons, and his 1-for-3 performance on Wednesday brought his average up to .206 through 34 at-bats. As of now, the Mariners have little choice but to continue to keep Beckham in the mix until outfielder/infielder Dee Gordon can be activated from the disabled list. Beckham has a prime chance to earn more playing time, but his career slash line of .239/.303/.367 does not help his case as someone who can help a fantasy team at any point.
