Ian Happ Breaks Out of Slump With Five-RBI Performance to Carry Cubs

It's been rough sledding of late for Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, but he was able to turn things around at the plate on Wednesday in the 10-4 win over the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. Happ went 2-for-6 at the plate with a home run and a season-high five RBI to boost his season average to .215 and his OPS to .782. It was the 31-year-old veteran's third career game with at least five RBI, and it also snapped a nine-game homerless drought. Happ came into Wednesday's contest in Pittsburgh hitting .122 (6-for-49) with a homer, two doubles, three RBI, four runs, nine walks, and 26 strikeouts in his last 14 games since May 9, which included just two multi-hit games. Fantasy managers are hoping that Wednesday's turnaround will be the start of more consistent production from Happ and the Cubs, who snapped a 10-game losing streak in the win over the Bucs. Happ now has a .346 on-base percentage, .436 slugging percentage, 11 homers, 26 RBI, 36 runs scored, and two steals across 52 games in his 10th year in the big leagues.

Ian Happ Sitting for Second Straight Game, Should Managers be Concerned?

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Houston Astros for a "mental breather." Cubs manager Craig Counsell said, "he told him to take Saturday off completely, and Sunday, he's been hitting and doing other typical pregame work. The 31-year-old has struggled mightily over his last six games, slashing .042/.115/.083 with 14 strikeouts across 26 plate appearances. Overall, Happ had been solid, slashing .214/.350/.429 with 10 home runs, 20 RBI, 35 runs, and two stolen bases through 220 plate appearances. His walk BB% has increased from 13.1% last season to 16.4%, while his K% has ballooned from 22.8% to 33.2%. Although there is cause for some concern, fantasy managers should continue to hold onto Happ as he works his way back through his slump. Happ is expected to return to the Cubs lineup for Monday's contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ian Happ Out Again on Wednesday With Bruised Heel

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (heel) is out of the starting lineup on Wednesday for a second straight night against the Tampa Bay Rays while dealing with a bruised left heel, according to Taylor McGregor of Watch Marquee Sports. Happ is available off the bench, though, which means he should be able to return to action for Friday's series opener against the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates after an off day on Thursday. With Happ out again, Michael Conforto will start in left field for the Cubbies and will hit eighth against Rays right-hander Joe Boyle. Although Happ has already gone deep four times in his first 40 at-bats, he only has eight hits in total (.200 batting average) while driving in seven runs and scoring seven runs for the Cubs. Fantasy managers should check back on Friday to make sure that Happ is back in the lineup before returning him to their starting lineups. Conforto has gone hitless in just two career at-bats against Boyle.

Cubs, Ian Happ Not Currently Engaged in Extension Talks

The Chicago Cubs have not engaged in extension conversations with outfielder Ian Happ, according to Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times. The everyday left fielder is scheduled to hit free agency next offseason at the expiration of his three-year, $61 million contract. Happ played 150 games last year, and he has played at least 148 games in each of the last five seasons. He slashed 243/.342/.420 with 23 home runs, 116 wRC+, a 13.1% walk rate, and a 22.8% strikeout rate in 2025. He also got his defense back up to league average, posting 0 OAA and 0 FRV in the outfield. In addition to Happ, Chicago also has an important decision to make regarding Seiya Suzuki, who is slated for free agency next offseason. It seems unlikely that the Cubs would bring both back, especially since outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara appears ready to take on an everyday role in the majors.

Ian Happ Showing Subtle Signs of Aging Heading into 2026

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ has established himself as one of the most consistent players in MLB. Dating back to 2023, the 31-year-old has posted three consecutive seasons with at least 650 plate appearances, a .240 batting average, 85 runs scored, 20 home runs, and 75 RBI. Happ also owns an excellent 12.1% walk rate for his career, which makes him a consistent on-base presence at or near the top of a strong Cubs lineup. While Happ's steady and well-rounded production makes him an extremely valuable real-life player, his profile is a little less exciting for fantasy managers. In addition to his middling batting average, Happ's stolen base total dipped to six in 2025 after consecutive years with at least 13 in 2023 and 2024. Happ is still locked into everyday playing time in left field in Chicago, which should lead to quality counting stats in the run and RBI categories. He may be slightly undervalued as the 178th player off the board by average draft position, but Happ's profile is also one without high-end fantasy upside.

Ian Happ Homers and Steals a Base in Cubs Win

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ helped his team rally to an extra-inning win on Labor Day against the visiting Braves. Happ finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. He has 19 homers and six stolen bases on the year while hitting .238 with a .328 wOBA in 126 games. The 31-year-old switch-hitter has been solid for the resurgent Cubs this season and has picked things up over the last month. Since August 1, he is hitting .277 with four of those 19 homers along with a .378 wOBA. Monday's win keeps the Cubs in a great spot to make the postseason with nine games between them and the Reds, the first team out of the playoffs. They are 5.5 games behind the Brewers in the chase for the NL Central. Happ and the Cubs continue their homestand with two more against Atlanta before hosting the Nationals this coming weekend.

Ian Happ Returns Against Orioles

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (shin) is starting in left field and will hit seventh in Friday's series opener at Wrigley Field against the visiting Baltimore Orioles and left-hander Trevor Rogers. Happ did not play in Wednesday's series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers after fouling a ball off his left shin on Tuesday, but he's feeling better after also having a scheduled off day on Thursday and will return to action to begin the weekend. Fantasy managers may want to leave him out of their lineups, though, against a left-hander that is having a resurgent season in 2025 for the O's. The switch-hitting Happ is batting .243 (28-for-115) against left-handed pitchers this year, but he's hit only three of his 15 home runs on the year against them. Happ is also hitting .231 with three home runs since the All-Star break in mid-July.

Ian Happ Won't Go on Injured List

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (shin) will not need a stint on the injured list, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. The Cubs are recalling catching prospect Moises Ballesteros and have designated infielder Vidal Brujan for assignment in a corresponding move. Happ left Tuesday's game early against the Milwaukee Brewers after fouling a ball off his left shin, but X-rays came back negative and he will not go on the IL for now. However, the 30-year-old is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest in Milwaukee. Fantasy managers will want to check back on Friday to see if Happ is ready to play in the series opener at Wrigley Field against the Baltimore Orioles. With Happ sitting out in the finale against the Brew Crew, Seiya Suzuki is in left field and Ballesteros will make a start as the designated hitter against Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta.

Ian Happ Exits Tuesday With Bruised Shin, May Require Injured List Stint

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (shin) exited Tuesday's 9-3 loss to the Brewers in the eighth inning after fouling a ball off his left shin. X-rays after the game were negative, and Happ said he will need to get the swelling down and manage the pain. However, he may require a stint on the injured list. He went 1-for-3 with a double before being pinch-hit for by Vidal Brujan. The 30-year-old is having a disappointing season, slashing .227/.324/.380 with 14 home runs, 50 RBI, and five stolen bases in 444 plate appearances. Fantasy managers should check Wednesday's lineup, although it would not be surprising to see him out of the lineup, especially since he may need to miss time.

Ian Happ Drops Down to Seventh Spot in Batting Order

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ has been dropped to seventh in the batting order for the second game of the series in the Bronx on Saturday against the hosting New York Yankees and left-hander Max Fried. Second baseman Nico Hoerner will bat leadoff for the Cubbies. Happ didn't even start against lefty Carlos Rodon in Friday's 11-0 blowout loss, and now he'll hit near the bottom of the lineup after going 2-for-32 (.063) with a double, run scored, two RBI, eight walks and eight strikeouts in nine games so far in July. The 30-year-old left-handed hitter has hit .556 with a 1.889 OPS, two home runs and two RBI in nine career at-bats versus Fried, but he's also batting .223 (23-for-103) with only two of his 12 home runs and a 30:16 K:BB against left-handed pitchers this season. The way Happ has been swinging it, he's one to fade against Fried.
