Royals Request Release Waivers On Kyle Zimmer

The Kansas City Royals have requested unconditional release waivers on right-handed reliever Kyle Zimmer. Zimmer was previously designated for assignment by Kansas City as the club added Rule 5 draft-eligible prospects to the 40-man roster. The fifth-overall pick in the 2012 draft, Zimmer pitched to a 4.83 ERA and a 4.82 FIP in 54 innings for Kansas City last season, giving up 30 walks while striking out 46 batters. The 30-year-old also registered 10 holds. The Royals' current high-leverage bullpen options include Scott Barlow, Josh Staumont, and Domingo Tapia.

Kyle Zimmer Designated For Assignment Amid Flurry Of Moves

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Kyle Zimmer was designated for assignment Friday as the team made room for seven players on the 40-man roster. The club added pitchers Jonathan Bowlan, Collin Snider, and Nathan Webb, catcher MJ Melendez, and infielders Maikel Garcia and Nick Pratto from their own system and claimed infielder Lucius Fox from the Orioles. Zimmer appeared in 52 games for the Royals in 2021, starting two games and recording a 4-1 record with two saves and a 4.83 ERA. Of the players added, Melendez and Pratto are the highest profile, as each is a top-five prospect in the system and both have the potential to make an impact at the major-league level in 2022. Neither needs to be drafted in redraft formats to start the upcoming season.

Kyle Zimmer Activated From Injured List

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Kyle Zimmer (neck) has been activated from the 10-day injured list, the team announced on Monday. Zimmer was placed on the IL earlier this month with neck spasms. Injuries have hampered the 29-year-old right-hander's season and he will surely be looking to rebound from a ghastly July that left him with a 4.83 ERA. In a coordinating move, the Royals placed left-handed pitcher Jake Brentz on the injured list retroactive to August 21 with left shoulder impingement syndrome.

Kyle Zimmer Placed On Injured List With Neck Spasms

The Kansas City Royals placed relief pitcher Kyle Zimmer (neck) on the 10-day injured list due to neck spasms on Wednesday. Infielder Emmanuel Rivera (wrist) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move. The neck spasms first appeared for Zimmer during his outing against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. He walked all three batters he faced before being removed from the game. Zimmer got off to a strong start to the season. He had a 2.64 ERA by the end of June. However, July was brutal for him as he went on to allow 10 earned runs over 10.1 innings across the month.

Kyle Zimmer Earns His Second Save On Tuesday

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Kyle Zimmer closed out the team's 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday to earn his second save of the year. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed one walk, no hits and no runs. It was an interesting development to see Zimmer get the save opportunity over Josh Staumont, who had earned the last five saves for the team. Staumont hasn't pitched since Saturday, so he was certainly available. Staumont struggled in that outing on Saturday, giving up four hits, a walk and two earned runs over one inning, albeit still preserving a 7-5 victory. Staumont should still be seen as the primary candidate for saves in Kansas City for now, but Tuesday's development might suggest that Zimmer is next in line behind Staumont. Zimmer has had a strong season with a 2.65 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over 17 innings. He's worth a speculative add in the deepest of leagues where saves are especially scarce.

Kyle Zimmer Considered Week-To-Week

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Kyle Zimmer (shoulder) has been placed on the 10-day injured list. The righty is currently dealing with a strain in his right trapezius, although fortunately, the injury is affecting his non-throwing arm. The 29-year-old is posting a 3.38 ERA this season throughout 13.1 innings of work while also allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Fantasy managers should consider him week-to-week.

Kyle Zimmer Records First Save On Sunday

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Kyle Zimmer pitched a clean 10th inning against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday to earn his first save of the year. He needed just 14 pitches and he recorded two strikeouts in the inning, allowing no walks or hits. It was an odd save situation as the team's presumed primary closer Greg Holland pitched the eighth and ninth innings and earned the win. Zimmer is off to a great start to the season. He's made four appearances and has pitched 6.1 innings, allowing just one hit and two walks without allowing a run. He could be a top save candidate at some point this year, but the Royals have several other guys breathing down Holland's neck as well, most notably Jesse Hahn, Wade Davis and Josh Staumont.

Kyle Zimmer Placed On 10-Day Injured List

Kansas City Royals starter Kyle Zimmer (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday afternoon. The 29-year-old is dealing with neuritis in his right elbow, effectively ending his season. Zimmer posted a 1.57 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 26/10 K/BB through 23 innings in 2020. The former top prospect was a reliable relief option for the Royals and may get a look at the starting rotation in 2021.

Kyle Zimmer Only Going From The Stretch

Kansas City Royals pitcher Kyle Zimmer has decided to embrace his conversion to the bullpen by ditching the wind-up. It's a move that is fairly common amongst short relievers, but it seemed like every member of the Royals organization has held their breath and hoped for a magical turnaround with the oft-injured pitcher. Zimmer has been the unicorn of the organization for years, inspiring impassioned defenses that if he could just stay healthy, he was going to be a star. This move makes sense if it can keep him in the bigs, but it's also probably heartbreaking for a lot of front office members who swore that Zimmer's breakout was just around the corner. For now, this signifies him simply working as a middle reliever for the time being, giving him nearly no fantasy value.

Kyle Zimmer Optioned Back To Triple-A

Kansas City Royals reliever Kyle Zimmer was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Monday afternoon. Zimmer, the fifth overall pick from 2012, finally made the Royals Opening Day roster, but he wholly underwhelmed. The 27-year-old allowed two runs on two hits to go along with five walks through two innings of work. He will likely get another opportunity later in the season, but ignore him for fantasy purposes until then. Glenn Sparkman was recalled in a corresponding move and will likely start against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
