San Diego Padres relief pitchers Wandy Peralta and Luis Patino are both dealing with visa issues as pitchers and catchers are reporting for spring training. Padres manager Mike Shildt told reporters on Sunday about the visa issues for the two aforementioned arms but did not expand beyond that. It's a fairly common issue with foreign players and it should be sorted out soon enough to give Peralta and Patino plenty of time to ramp up for the regular season. Peralta is coming off an excellent season with the New York Yankees in which he registered a 2.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 51:30 K/BB ratio to go along with four saves over 54 innings of relief. Patino, who started his professional career with the Padres, was optioned by the Rays last season before being traded to the Chicago White Sox for cash. The Sox designated him for assignment back in December before the Padres claimed him off waivers. He hasn't shown much in the majors so far (5.02 ERA, 1.496 WHIP in 136 1/3 career innings) but is still just 24 years old. Both players have a shot to contribute to the San Diego bullpen this season.

Luis Patino Claimed By Padres
Right-hander Luis Patino was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres. Patino was released earlier in the week by the Chicago White Sox. The former top prospect threw 21 2/3 innings last season, compiling a 4.57 ERA and 5.33 FIP. Patino was formerly with the Rays and was a big piece of the trade that sent Blake Snell to San Diego. The 24-year-old made one start in 2023 and has started 23 of the 45 games he has appeared in during his career. Overall, he's been a highly ineffective pitcher in the majors and there is no reason to roster him in most fantasy formats.

White Sox Designate Luis Patino For Assignment
The Chicago White Sox have designated right-hander Luis Patino for assignment. In a corresponding move, the club selected the contract of right-hander Josimar Cousin from Double-A Birmingham. It's been a significant fall from grace for Patino, a former top prospect with the San Diego Padres. The highly-touted righty was moved to the Tampa Bay Rays as a headliner in the 2020 Blake Snell trade and while he tossed a decent 4.31 ERA in 19 outings (15 starts) with the Rays in 2021, he was tattooed for an 8.10 ERA in 20 innings for the club in the 2022 campaign. The 24-year-old split the 2023 season between the White Sox and Rays, working to a 4.57 ERA in nine appearances (one start) but also posted a 5.33 FIP and a 5.36 SIERA while walking a hefty 14.1% of the batters he faced a season ago.

Luis Patino Making The Start Wednesday
Chicago White Sox right-hander Luis Patino is making the start on Wednesday against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. Patino will be making his first start in the big leagues and 23rd total in his major-league career. In seven relief appearances for the White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays this year, he's allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 17 hits (three homers) while walking 12 and striking out 15 in 17 innings. The 23-year-old hasn't gone beyond four innings in any of his recent outings and will be a poor fantasy streamer against a strong Arizona lineup on Wednesday's slate. In his four big-league seasons, Patino has a 4.99 ERA (5.37 FIP), 1.50 WHIP, 68 walks and 121 strikeouts in 131 2/3 innings over 43 outings (22 starts).

Luis Patino Allows Three Runs In Return To Rays Rotation
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Luis Patino made his return to the team's rotation on Monday with a start against the Boston Red Sox. After being called up, the right-hander scattered five hits, three earned runs, and three walks in five innings of work against the Red Sox. He struck out four batters and also allowed a home run. Overall, Patino turned in 14 swinging strikes and finished with a solid 31% CSW rate. The 22-year-old has now logged a 4.34 ERA and a 5.63 FIP in 18.2 innings in the Majors this season to go along with 11 strikeouts and nine walks.

Luis Patino Called Up To Start Monday
The Tampa Bay Rays recalled right-hander Luis Patino from Triple-A Durham on Monday and designated right-hander Matt Wisler for assignment in a corresponding move. Patino will make the start on Monday against the Boston Red Sox. The 22-year-old will be making his fifth start of the season for Tampa. In his previous four starts, he allowed six earned runs on 16 hits (two homers allowed) while walking six and striking out seven. Patino has made nine starts at Durham in 2022, going 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched. He's worth a look as a streamer in deeper fantasy leagues, and there's a chance he could remain in the rotation with Shane McClanahan (shoulder) on the injured list.

Luis Patino Called Up To Start Thursday
The Tampa Bay Rays are calling up right-hander Luis Patino from Triple-A Durham on Thursday in order to start against the Kansas City Royals. This will be Patino's fourth start for the Rays this year, with his last coming on July 23. He hasn't been particularly effective in the majors in just eight innings pitched this year, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits (two home runs allowed) while striking out three and walking four. Patino has been sidelined for most of the year with an oblique strain. The matchup against Kansas City is nice, but Patino will be an extremely risky fantasy baseball streamer in his return to the Rays starting rotation. There's a chance the 22-year-old is sent right back to Durham after this start.

Luis Patino Likely To Return Friday
Tampa Bay Rays skipper Kevin Cash said it's likely that right-hander Luis Patino (oblique) will be activated from the injured list on Friday and pitch against the Baltimore Orioles, although he's not stretched out. Patino made six minor league rehab starts and allowed seven earned runs on 19 hits while striking out 19 and walking only three in 17 2/3 innings, but he had a setback earlier this month due to a finger blister. The 22-year-old will likely be used as more of an opener on Friday against Baltimore, so he won't be in play as a fantasy streamer in his return. Patino made it two-thirds of an inning and allowed a run in his only start of the season back on April 11 before his injury, so it might take him a bit to get back up to speed in Tampa's rotation.

Luis Patino To Make Another Rehab Outing Tuesday
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Luis Patino (oblique) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three over 46 pitches and 2 2/3 innings on June 16 with Triple-A Durham. Skipper Kevin Cash said that Patino felt healthy, and his fastball velocity was strong. The 22-year-old will continue to build up his endurance with a four-inning outing scheduled with Durham on Tuesday. He'll likely need to get to the point where he can work five or six innings before rejoining Tampa's starting rotation. Patino suffered a left oblique strain after throwing only 13 pitches in his season debut on April 11 against the Oakland Athletics. Fantasy managers in need of rotation help should check to see if Patino is available on the waiver wire, as he's getting closer to a return.

Luis Patino, Nick Anderson On The Mend
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Luis Patino (oblique) faced hitters for the first time on June 1 and felt good while using all four of his pitches. Manager Kevin Cash said Patino will face hitters at least one more time after initially getting injured in his season debut on April 11. Meanwhile, reliever Nick Anderson (elbow) is throwing two to three bullpen sessions a week, with his latest coming on June 4. He'll likely need a few more side sessions before moving to live batting practice and then a minor league rehab assignment. Anderson's timetable is unclear, but the initial projection after his elbow surgery was that he'd be back with the Rays after the All-Star break in July.
