Cubs Sign Nick Neidert To Minor-League Deal

The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent right-hander Nick Neidert to a minor-league deal last Friday, according to a source. The 26-year-old was recently non-tendered by the Miami Marlins. His deal includes opt-outs on June 1 and July 1. It's unclear if Neidert will be ready for spring training after undergoing surgery on his knee in September. He made just one start for the Fish in 2022, allowing two earned runs on five hits while walking none and striking out three in five innings in a loss to the New York Mets on July 30. In 13 major-league appearances (eight starts) in three seasons with Miami, he has a 4.59 ERA (5.45 FIP), a 1.45 WHIP and 28 strikeouts in 49 innings pitched. He'll serve as starting and relief depth for the Cubbies in 2023.

Nick Neidert Earns A Win On Tuesday

Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Nick Neidert was called up to make Tuesday's start against the New York Mets and ended up earning his first win of the season. Neidert pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five. Neidert walked a tightrope all evening, as he was struggling with his control, throwing 43 of his 74 pitches for strikes. His slider movement was on point though, allowing him to get away with missing most of his spots with his fastball. Neidert evened his record at 1-1 and lowered his ERA to 4.11. His future seems to be as a swingman or long relief bullpen arm, but the Marlins could keep giving him starts just to see what they have in him.

Nick Neidert Called Up, Starting Tuesday's Game

The Miami Marlins have called up pitcher Nick Neidert from Triple-A and he is slated to start Tuesday's game against the New York Mets. The 24-year-old Neidert has bounced between the majors and Triple-A throughout the year. He's made six appearances (five starts) for the Marlins this year and has posted a 3.96 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. He's struggled with walks and hasn't been missing many bats, leading to his 0.9 K/BB ratio. There's a good chance he'll be headed right back to Triple-A unless he has a standout outing on Tuesday.

Nick Neidert Recalled To Start Against Nationals

The Miami Marlins recalled right-hander Nick Neidert from Triple-A Jacksonville in order to make the spot start on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. Outfielder Monte Harrison was optioned to Jacksonville in a corresponding move. Neidert has made five appearances (four starts) in the big leagues for Miami this year, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 13 walks in 20 innings pitched. Not only has Niedert walked as many as he's struck out, but he hasn't gone more than 4 1/3 innings in any of his four starts so far this year, which makes him a poor streaming option for those in both daily fantasy and single-year leagues against Washington.

Nick Neidert Chips In Four Scoreless Innings On Thursday

Miami Marlins rookie pitcher Nick Neidert provided four scoreless innings of relief in Thursday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Neidert had just been called up from Triple-A before the game and was needed after a short four inning start from Sandy Alcantara. In Neidert's four innings, he allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out two. It was an impressive performance at just the right time, as the Marlins bullpen has been overworked of late. Neidert's future is likely in the bullpen in a role like this one, making him mostly irrelevant in most fantasy leagues.

Nick Neidert Activated And Optioned On Monday

Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Nick Neidert (biceps) was activated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville. Neidert pitched 3 2/3 innings in a rehab start and allowed just one run. He's a candidate to take the rotation spot vacated by Cody Poteet (knee) going on the injured list. Neidert has some fifth starter upside, but isn't ready to be a fantasy contributor at this point.

Nick Neidert Placed On 10-Day Injured List

The Miami Marlins have placed pitcher Nick Neidert (biceps) on the 10-day injured list due to right biceps inflammation. The team recalled infielder Lewin Diaz from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Neidert had just rejoined the team after being called up to start Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. He pitched well in the game, allowing four hits, two walks and one earned run over four innings. He spent multiple weeks at Triple-A before Wednesday's start and posted a 1.13 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 16 innings. There hasn't been any news yet in terms of the estimated timeline for Neidert's injury.

Nick Neidert Provides Four Solid Innings On Wednesday

Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Nick Neidert was called up to make Wednesday's start and pitched decently against the Philadelphia Phillies. Neidert threw four innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three. He lowered his ERA to 5.63. Neidert will show some solid flashes, but he doesn't seem to have the raw "stuff" nor the velocity to be anything close to a front-end starter. He could settle into a fifth starter role but is more likely to work as a swing man and fill-in starter at the big league level. He is unlikely to develop much fantasy league relevance.

Nick Neidert Optioned On Wednesday

Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Nick Neidert was optioned to the team's Alternate Training Site on Wednesday. Neidert was excellent in spring training and showed some positive signs in his three starts this season, but was overall struggling, mostly with his control. In 12 innings, he's walked 11 and struck out only eight. Neidert's low-90s fastball means he needs to have pinpoint control to be successful. He'll get some time to work at the ATS and hopefully will have the kind of control he showed in the minors the next time he's on the big league mound.

Nick Neidert Struggles Massively On Tuesday

Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Nick Neidert struggled in Tuesday's start against the Baltimore Orioles. He lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. Neidert had struggled a lot with throwing strikes in his previous outings, walking almost a batter per inning. Walks were less of an issue in this one, but he was still clearly missing his spots and getting way too much of the plate. With a low-90s fastball, Neidert is a guy who needs to hit the corners of the plate if he's going to have success. He'll get another few starts, but if he keeps struggling, the Marlins have enough minor league pitching depth to not have to keep sending Neidert out there if he keeps giving up runs.
