Brendan Donovan Scratched, Nolan Gorman in Lineup

The St. Louis Cardinals have made second baseman/outfielder Brendan Donovan (personal) a late scratch for their game against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Donovan is away dealing with a family emergency, which will leave second base to Thomas Saggese and third to Nolan Gorman. Shortstop Masyn Winn will lead off in Donovan's place. The team had originally planned to give Gorman the day off, but he'll instead bat fifth in a meeting with starter Dylan Cease. Gorman has gone 1-for-3 with two strikeouts against the right-hander.

Nolan Gorman Heads to the Bench

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman was absent from the starting lineup ahead of Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres. This appears to be a routine rest day for Gorman who has played in each of the last two games since returning from the injured list. Gorman was struggling with the bat before going down, but has two hits and an RBI since returning. He's not someone that needs to be rostered in most fantasy formats right now. Thomas Saggese will bat eighth and cover third base versus right-hander Dylan Cease on Sunday.

Nolan Gorman Returning From Injured List on Friday

Katie Woo of The Athletic reports that St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman (back) will come off the 10-day injured list before Friday's series opener against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Third baseman Nolan Arenado (shoulder) will go on the IL in a corresponding move. Gorman started a minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday and homered on Wednesday. It remains to be seen how the Cardinals will handle third base duties with Arenado on the shelf without a timetable to return, but Gorman could see regular at-bats between second and third base. The 25-year-old continues to be a disappointment on offense in his fourth year in the big leagues, though, so fantasy managers in mixed leagues should probably be content to leave him on the waiver wire. Gorman has slashed .219/.310/.408 with nine homers and 29 RBI in just 66 games in 2025.

Nolan Gorman Nearing Rehab Assignment

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman (back) could begin a rehab assignment next week (July 28), according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. Gorman was placed on the 10-day injured list in mid-July with lower back pain and has since received a pain-killing injection. The 25-year-old has played every infield position other than shortstop for St. Louis this season. In 226 plate appearances, he's hitting .219/.310/.408 with nine home runs, 29 RBI, and 31 runs scored. There's no question that Gorman has power (.471 xSLG), but swing-and-miss continues to be an issue (30.1% strikeout rate). He's blocked off from everyday playing time by veterans Nolan Arenado at third base and Brendan Donovan at second base, but St. Louis may make a move or series of moves at the trade deadline that could free up some opportunity.

Nolan Gorman Receives Injection for Pain

St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Nolan Gorman (back) is on the injured list with lower back pain. According to Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak, Gorman had an injection for his lower back pain and could be ready to return when first eligible on July 29. His return should be based on how he responds to this injection. The injection should help relieve his lower back pain and inflammation, and allow Gorman the mobility to play. It is not known whether a rehab assignment will be needed. The power-hitting second baseman has logged an OPS this year of .718 and a wRC+ of 102. Gorman has averaged 20 home runs over the last three seasons. Fantasy managers with an IL spot in deep leagues can continue to stash Gorman.

Nolan Gorman Placed on 10-Day Injured List

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed infielder/designated hitter Nolan Gorman (back) on the 10-day IL with a back injury, retroactive to July 18. The team recalled infielder Thomas Saggese from Triple-A Memphis to take Gorman's roster spot. Gorman was a late scratch from Friday's lineup and will now miss at least the next week-plus. The 25-year-old has batted .219/.310/.408 with nine home runs and 29 RBI in 226 plate appearances, though his .345 xwOBA suggests he has deserved a better fate. While Gorman has divided his time among DH, second base, and the hot corner, the Cardinals have capable regulars at each position with Ivan Herrera, All-Star Brendan Donovan, and Nolan Arenado.

Nolan Gorman Scratched on Friday

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman (back) was scratched from the starting lineup for Friday's series opener against the hosting Arizona Diamondbacks to begin the second half of the season. The Cardinals didn't give a specific reason for why Gorman was scratched, but he had been dealing with a back issue going into this week's All-Star break. With the 25-year-old starting on the bench, Brendan Donovan will take over at the keystone and will hit leadoff, with Jordan Walker entering the game in right field and batting seventh against D-backs right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. Gorman, a former first-rounder, continues to be inconsistent with the bat for the Cards, as he enters the second half hitting just .219 (43-for-196) with nine home runs, 29 RBI and 31 runs. Donovan was an All-Star this year and has hit .571 with an RBI in seven career at-bats versus Pfaadt.

Nolan Gorman Crushes Three-Run Homer in Win

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman continued a productive June in the team's 8-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. With the Cardinals ahead 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning and two men on, Gorman smashed a 433-foot home run to extend the lead to six. The lefty-swinging Gorman hadn't gone yard against a southpaw this year until he took Quintana deep. He also walked twice and picked up an additional run scored during a 1-for-3 day. While Gorman batted a miserable .189/.283/.300 through May, his line has made a sizable jump thanks to a hot start to June. Gorman has gone 9-for-28 with three homers, eight RBI, five runs scored, and five walks in 10 games this month. As a result, he's hitting a much-improved .220/.317/.398 with four HRs, 17 RBI, 17 runs, and a 12.9% walk rate in 139 plate appearances. At least for now, Gorman is looking more like the slugger who belted 27 homers and knocked in 76 runs two years ago. He'll take on Brewers righty Quinn Priester on Sunday.

Cardinals Looking to Get Nolan Gorman in the Lineup More

The Athletic's Katie Woo writes that St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman was the odd man out for most of May, but the Cardinals want to find ways to get his bat in the lineup more regularly, and it could come in June with the Cardinals playing 28 games in 29 days. He came into Tuesday's game hitting .187/.280/.297 with just one homer and nine RBI in 91 at-bats this year, but manager Oliver Marmol and hitting coach Brant Brown are encouraged that he has dropped his strikeout rate from 37.6% in 2024 to 27.1% this year. In Tuesday's 10-7 loss to the Royals, Gorman made the start at designated hitter and finished 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season, two RBI, a walk and two strikeouts in the eight-hole. The 25-year-old's numbers don't look pretty in 2025, but he might deserve a pickup in deeper leagues if he gets on a roll and plays regularly in June for the Red Birds.

Nolan Gorman Starting On The Bench Against Bucs

St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Nolan Gorman is starting on the bench for Tuesday's contest against the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium. This could be more of a regular occurrence against right-handed pitchers for Gorman, who has struggled mightily to a .175/.286/.302 slash line in his first 63 at-bats of 2025. The 24-year-old former 19th overall pick in 2018 has a home run, nine RBI, 10 runs scored, 11 walks and 21 strikeouts in 21 games played. Brendan Donovan is starting at second base and batting third, Alec Burleson is at first base and hitting sixth, and Willson Contreras is the designated hitter and batting fifth against Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes. Donovan has three hits and an RBI in 10 career at-bats against Skenes, while Burleson has hit .417 with two RBI in 12 at-bats against him. Contreras is hitless in his six at-bats versus Skenes.
