Catcher Robinson Chirinos officially announced his retirement from professional baseball on Wednesday on his Twitter account. Chirinos hadn't played at all in 2023 and hit .179/.265/.287 with a .552 OPS, nine doubles, four home runs, 22 RBI, a steal and 10 runs scored in 67 games for the Baltimore Orioles in 2022. He spent time with six different teams during his 11-year career, but he only spent significant time with one team, the Texas Rangers (seven seasons). He saw one-year stints with the Mets, Rays, Cubs, Orioles and Astros. The 38-year-old backstop will walk away from the game with a career .226/.319/.419 slash line with a .738 OPS, 95 home runs, 306 RBI and five stolen bases in 714 regular season games.
Baltimore Orioles catcher Robinson Chirinos (head) passed the league's concussion protocol and will avoid a stint on the injured list after taking a pitch off the left side of his face/shoulder on Wednesday. Manager Brandon Hyde said that Chirinos should be back in the lineup this weekend against the Los Angeles Angels. "That was a good phone call to get that he's OK," Hyde said. With Chirinos out of the lineup on Thursday, Anthony Bemboom is doing the catching and hitting eighth against Oakland Athletics right-hander Paul Blackburn. The 37-year-old Chirinos has just four singles and no RBI in his first 22 at-bats over 10 games played. He's just keeping the seat warm for catching prospect Adley Rutschman.
Robinson Chirinos Heading To Baltimore On One-Year Deal
The Baltimore Orioles signed veteran catcher Robinson Chirinos to a one-year contract, according to Marly Rivera of ESPN. Chirinos is nothing more than a stopgap option for the O's, as top-prospect Adley Rutschman should spend the bulk of the season as the starting catcher in Baltimore. The 37-year-old Chirinos slashed .221/324/.454 with five homers across 45 games for the Cubs last season and is an afterthought in even the deepest fantasy leagues.
Robinson Chirinos Suffers Left Side Injury On Wednesday
Chicago Cubs catcher Robinson Chirinos (side) was lifted in the seventh inning of Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. He grabbed his left side after a check swing during his seventh inning at-bat. He was then visited by a trainer and manager David Ross and promptly lifted from the game. Chirinos and Austin Romine have been serving as backups to starting catcher Willson Contreras lately. Romine would become the primary backup if Chirinos is forced to miss time. Over 45 games on the year, Chirinos is slashing .227/.324/.454 with five home runs, 15 RBI and 13 runs.
Chicago Cubs catcher Robinson Chirinos is absent from Friday's lineup against the Kansas City Royals. Austin Romine will do the catching in his place. Chirinos, who was signed in early July, has taken on the starting catcher duties after Willson Contreras (knee) landed on the injured list. He has done well in his short stint after a disappointing 2020, slashing .286/.406/.585 with four home runs in 28 games. He's always been able to hit for power with a career .435 slugging, and fantasy managers may want to stream Chirinos until he loses playing time once Contreras returns.
Chicago Cubs catcher Robinson Chirinos went 4-for-6 with two runs and a solo home run in Friday's loss versus the Miami Marlins. Chirinos has become the new starting catcher with Willson Contreras (knee) being placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday. Chirinos raised his batting average from .238 to .250 with the big performance and now has four home runs and five RBI on the season. Despite the big game, the veteran doesn't offer much value to managers and can be avoided in most formats at the moment.
Chicago Cubs backup catcher Robinson Chirinos showed his power in Friday's victory versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chirinos drew the start with Willson Contreras getting the afternoon off and went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs. Chirinos was acquired by the Cubs on July 5 and he has hit the ball well in a limited role. The veteran is now hitting .375 with three home runs and four RBI in 16 at-bats. Despite the nice performance, Chirinos doesn't play enough to hold any value outside of DFS and can remain on the waiver wire.
The Chicago Cubs signed catcher Robinson Chirinos to an undisclosed one-year major league deal on Monday and designated catcher Taylor Gushue for assignment in a corresponding move. Chirinos is active for the team's game on Monday and will immediately serve as the backup to Willson Contreras. The 37-year-old will give the Cubbies an experienced backup. He has yet to play in 2020, but Chirinos had 26 combined games with the Texas Rangers and New York Mets last year, hitting just .162/.232/243 with a homer and seven RBI in 74 at-bats. Chirinos might become an option in deep two-catcher leagues, but only if Contreras were forced to miss extended time due to an injury.
New York Yankees catcher Robinson Chirinos (wrist) was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist, ending his bid to make the Opening Day roster as Gary Sanchez's backup. Chirinos was hit by a pitch in the Grapefruit League game on Wednesday night. Wrist and hand specialists will be consulted in the coming days to determine the next steps. The 36-year-old backstop hit .162 (12-for-74) with one home run and seven RBI in 26 games with the Mets and Rangers in 2020, and he was competing with Kyle Higashioka for a spot on the Yankees bench to begin the season. Chirinos is a career .231/.325/.431 hitter with 86 long balls and 269 RBI in 602 major league games with Texas, the Mets, Tampa and Houston. He'll obviously be out for an extended amount of time.
Free-agent catcher Robinson Chirinos signed a minor-league contract with the New York Yankees on Monday, adding some uncertainty to the team's catching situation. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole pitched well with Chirinos behind the plate when the two were teammates in 2019 with the Astros, and there's some speculation that Cole and Chirinos might be paired again in 2021. Cole pitched well no matter who his catcher was in 2019, though, and Chirinos doesn't seem likely to overtake Kyle Higashioka as the team's primary backup catcher (if the Yankees decide to go this route) or as Cole's personal catcher. Fantasy managers should expect Chirinos to be little more than a depth piece in 2021 as a result, and if starting catcher Gary Sanchez continues to struggle or if Cole requests a personal catcher, then Higashioka is likely to take the reins before Chirinos does.
