Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Sandy Baez fired two scoreless innings on Tuesday against the White Sox, extending his scoreless streak to 6 1/3 innings on the year. Having appeared in just two games since his promotion, Baez is wasting no time making an impression. He's pitched multiple innings in both games and has allowed just one hit thus far. He has issued three walks so far, and control has been a bit of a concern throughout his minor-league career, but with an average fastball over 95 MPH, it's easy to see why the Tigers are excited about this 24-year-old prospect.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Sandy Baez tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his first MLB appearance against the Yankees on Monday, striking out four without allowing a single hit. He did walk four batters after taking over for starting pitcher Drew VerHagen, but it was otherwise a great start to the 24-year-old's MLB career. Baez's minor league numbers were encouraging as well, as he held a 3.90 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and a 45/19 K/BB ratio through 55 1/3 innings. He is not on the fantasy radar at the moment, but he is certainly a prospect to keep an eye on moving forward.
Detroit Tigers prospect Sandy Baez started in place of the injured Mike Fiers on Tuesday and fired three innings of one-run ball for his club. He allowed four hits but didn't allow a single walk in his short outing. Baez was called upon to fill in for Fiers, who has been suffering from a stiff back throughout spring training. Manager Ron Gardenhire characterized Fiers' back problems as disc-related, but there has been no official medical diagnosis as such. His next start is not yet scheduled.
