Free-agent relief pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. This minor league offer will come with an invite to spring training, according to Rosenthal, giving him a chance to make the Padres Opening Day roster. The Mariners closer in 2012 and 2013, Wilhelmsen slumped to a 6.80 ERA in 2016 before seeing his ERA drop to 4.44 with a 17/12 K/BB ratio over 26 1/3 innings with Arizona before being released. He is unlikely to have fantasy value to begin the season but could get save opportunities if closer Brad Hand is traded.
