Tomoyuki Sugano to Start on Saturday

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (foot) is listed as the team's starter for Saturday's game against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays, according to The Baltimore Sun's Matt Weyrich. Sugano was forced to leave his last start early on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth inning when he was hit by a comebacker. The good news is that he avoided any fractures in his foot and will be able to make his next turn through the rotation in another tough matchup. The 35-year-old has been inconsistent in nine starts (44 1/3 innings) since the All-Star break, posting a 4.67 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 37:13 K:BB. Sugano has struggled in his two starts against Toronto this year, too, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits with four walks and only one strikeout in 8 2/3 innings pitched. He'll be a pretty volatile streamer this weekend.

Tomoyuki Sugano Leaves Early With Foot Injury

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (foot) left his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday with discomfort in his right foot, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Sugano limped off the mound and into the clubhouse in the fourth inning after he was struck by a 95.8 mph grounder off the bat of Hyeseong Kim. The Orioles replaced Sugano with lefty Grant Wolfram, ending a rough afternoon for the 35-year-old. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits, including three homers, with one strikeout and no walks over three innings. In his first season in the majors, Sugano has gone 10-7 with a 4.57 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and 96:35 K:BB across 143 2/3 frames. He's scheduled to make his next start on Sept. 14 against the Toronto Blue Jays, but that could change depending on the severity of his foot injury. Update: X-rays on Sugano's foot were negative, according to Kubatko.

Charlie Morton, Tomoyuki Sugano Expected to be Traded

Barring a dramatic winning streak after this week's All-Star break, USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale writes that the Baltimore Orioles are expected to trade right-handers Charlie Morton and Tomoyuki Sugano. Additionally, right-hander Zach Eflin (back) will immediately become trade bait for contending teams in search of pitching help when he makes his return from the injured list to open the second half of the season. Eflin has been out since late June due to back discomfort, but he could attract interest around the league if he can prove he's fully healthy when he returns before the July 31 trade deadline. The Orioles have been one of the most disappointing stories so far in 2025 and currently sit last in the American League East with a 43-52 record (11.5 games out of first) going into this week's All-Star break.

Orioles to Skip Tomoyuki Sugano's Next Start

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano will have his next start skipped on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers because the team is trying to give him as much rest as possible after he was in a six-man rotation during his career in Japan, according to interim manager Tony Mansolino. Instead, rookie right-hander Brandon Young will come up and make just his third major-league start against the offensively-challenged Rangers. The 35-year-old Sugano will get a couple of extra days off and is expected to make his next start in Friday's series opener against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays, which will be a much tougher matchup for Sugano for fantasy purposes. He hasn't gone five innings in any of his last three starts and has only 50 punchouts in 83 2/3 innings over his first 15 big-league starts for the O's.

Tomoyuki Sugano Pitches Seven Innings, Earns Win Tuesday

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano turned in another strong outing in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Mariners. Sugano pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits (including a solo home run) and a walk with five strikeouts. The 35-year-old veteran has settled into his first season with MLB, going 5-3 with a 3.04 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and a 5.07 K/9 rate in 12 starts and 71 IP. His strikeout numbers are very low, although fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised given how he pitched throughout his career in Japan. The good news is that he has limited baserunners, allowing him to pitch deep into games. Seven of his 12 starts have lasted at least six IP. Sugano's next scheduled matchup will be a middling one at a hot Athletics lineup in Sacramento.

Tomoyuki Sugano Keeps Rolling In Fourth Win

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano had another solid outing on Friday, tossing 7 innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Sugano surrendered just three hits, walked none, and struck out five. The 35-year-old free agent signing has been terrific for the Orioles so far, going 4-2 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 46 IP. It does seem like a bit of a mirage, but Sugano is yet to allow more than three runs in a start and has notched quality starts in four of his last five outings. He is worth a pickup in standard-size leagues, at least until his luck runs out. His next start should come next Thursday against the Minnesota Twins at home, a tasty matchup that should see Sugano in starting lineups in most formats.

Tomoyuki Sugano Records Career-High Eight Strikeouts

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano entered this game with the lowest strikeout percentage of any qualified starting pitcher. However, Sugano had his swing-and-miss stuff going during Monday's game against the New York Yankees. The right-hander tossed five shutout innings, allowing five hits, and striking out a career-high eight batters in the win. The 35-year-old has been a viable option posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 17/6 K/BB ratio across six starts this season. His next start will come against the Kansas City Royals at home. Sugano is worth a look as a deep league or AL-only option heading into that game.

Tomoyuki Sugano Tosses Seven Strong Innings

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano didn't have too many problems on the mound during Thursday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. The right-hander gave up back-to-back home runs in the third inning. Outside of the two homers, Sugano pitched extremely well on the mound here. He tossed seven innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out three batters in the win. This was arguably his best start of the season, so hopefully he can keep it going. He'll take a 3.43 ERA across 22 innings into his next start against the Washington Nationals. Sugano isn't a must-have fantasy option, but is worth a look in deep leagues and AL-only formats right now.

Tomoyuki Sugano Exits Due To Cramping

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano (hand) was removed early during Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-hander was pulled out prior to the bottom of the fifth inning due to cramping in his hand. Before exiting, Sugano allowed, four hits, two earned runs, and struck out one batter across four innings of work. This doesn't sound like a serious injury, so Sugano should be fine to make his next start against the Kansas City Royals. The 35-year-old rookie is probably only worth rostering in deep leagues and AL-only formats right now.

Tomoyuki Sugano Strong Again, Strikes Out Five In Three Innings

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano dazzled for three innings in Sunday's 4-3 Grapefruit League win over the Twins, allowing no runs, hits, or walks in the contest while striking out five of the nine batters he faced. That makes seven scoreless innings for the righty this spring, allowing four hits thus far with a 2:7 BB:K. With fellow starter Grayson Rodriguez possibly starting the season on the IL, the O's will need the rest of their arms healthy, and so far, Sugano has looked good. The 35-year-old pitcher out of Japan is worth a look at the end of deeper drafts, as RotoBaller ranks him at 324 overall, well ahead of his NFBC ADP of 353.
