Detroit Red Wings center Frans Nielsen was waived on Sunday. The 36-year-old Dane was once among the league's premier two-way players but has fallen way short of the 31.5 million dollar contract he signed with the Wings in 2016. He still has a year left on the deal following this season. Nielsen managed only nine points in 60 outings last season and has three points through 18 games in 2020-21. He's the second high-earning Red Wing to get dropped in a short space of time after defenseman Danny DeKeyser, who was scratched for six games before getting waived last Sunday. DeKeyser now sits on the team's taxi squad and Nielsen will join him if he isn't claimed.
