Rocket Mortgage Classic: 15 DFS Golf Picks

The Rocket Mortgage Classic

Preview for the Rocket Mortgage Classic: This week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic is a relatively new event on the PGA Tour as this will be just the fifth year that it has been held. The record at this tournament since 2019 is -26 which came just last year when Tony Finau beat a trio of players by five strokes. Winners of the Rocket Mortgage Classic over the last three years include Tony Finau in 2022, Cameron Davis in 2021, Bryson DeChambeau in 2020, and Nate Lashley in 2019.

Tournament purse: The prize money for this week’s event is $8.8M, the winner collects $1.584M and also earns himself 500 FedEx Cup points.

Course and key stats: Detroit Golf Club is 7,330 yards in length, is a par 72, and the greens are a mix of bentgrass and poa annua. The winning score at this tournament over the last four years ranges from -18 to -26 and we should see another birdie fest again this year in the Motor City. Some key stats to focus on this week, in order, are strokes gained: putting, strokes gained: off the tee, driving distance, strokes gained: tee to green, and strokes gained: approach.

The 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic field: We again have a max field size of 156 golfers this week, and the top 65 players plus ties after round 2 on Friday will move on to play round 3 on Saturday and round 4 on Sunday. We will see last year’s winner, Tony Finau, in action, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, and other quality players. On a scale ranging from A to D, I rank the field strength to be a C+.

All the best in your journey to win or at least be in the money in some contests this week – here are (in no particular order) 15 DFS golf picks on DraftKings (DK), plus I also include player salaries for DK. I consistently provide recent and seasonal finishes for each of my picks, their performances at the event over the last five years, and add in some valuable data.

15 Players Who Are Either High-Potential or Solid-Value Plays This Week – Get Them Into Your DFS Lineups

Rickie Fowler (Salary: DraftKings – $10.4K) – It’s really quite surprising how consistently great Fowler has been since the 2022-2023 campaign started with six top 10’s and a few teen finishes, as well. Everything is going smoothly for Rickie with sound stats, and while he hasn’t been a rockstar at this venue, he did finish one stroke out of a top 10 finish in 2020. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – cut, 2021 – T32, 2020 – T12, and 2019 – T46.

Collin Morikawa (Salary: DraftKings – $10.6K) – He hasn’t had a top 10 finish since The Masters in April, but does have three top 29’s over his last four starts excluding his withdrawal at the Memorial where he was solid on ball-striking as per usual along with a good putter. He’s well overdue for his next win, and why not in Detroit where the field is fairly weak and ripe for the taking. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: none.

Thomas Detry (Salary: DraftKings – $7.4K) – He’s not torching the PGA Tour but does have three top 21’s over his last eight starts if you count the Zurich Classic and plays a fairly well-round game. Don’t be overweight on Detry this week, but he’s worth using in a lineup if you create a bunch. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: none.

Cameron Davis (Salary: DraftKings – $9.3K) – This is an ideal course for Davis who hits a long ball and tends to spray it around off the tee blocks – good thing the fairways are generous in width and the rough isn’t so tough. He won here two years ago and had a respectable title defense last year finishing just outside of the top 10 on the back of solid approach and around the green play. He has been cold since his T4 at the PGA Championship last month, but did have a T33 last week at the Travelers Championship in a solid field, and I like his prospects to finish top 10 this week. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T14, 2021 – Won, 2020 – cut, and 2019 – cut.

Hideki Matsuyama (Salary: DraftKings – $9.6K) – He’s so darn good on approach, around the green, and even his putting lately has been half-decent, and it has resulted in seven consecutive top 29’s in mostly all supreme fields except for the Byron Nelson and Texas Open. He has been good here and has the opportunity to be great this week and hoist the trophy come Sunday evening. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2021 – WD, 2020 – T21, and 2019 – T13.

Ludvig Aberg (Salary: DraftKings – $8.7K) – Aberg is starting to show what he’s capable of with three top 25’s over his last four starts including a T24 last week where he gained 4.19 strokes off the tee and 4.93 strokes with his short game. He may be a tad bit expensive, but he’s worth paying up for given he’s capable of greatness in his career and it could come sooner rather than later. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: none.

Austin Eckroat (Salary: DraftKings – $8.0K) – He has the tools to do superb things on the PGA Tour and has been showing us his talent since March when he finished T5 at the Corales Puntacana Championship, and since then he finished T2 at the Byron Nelson and even more impressive, T10 at the U.S. Open two weeks ago. He missed the cut here two years ago, but his game is day and night since 2021. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2021 – cut.

Byeong Hun An (Salary: DraftKings – $8.2K) – Hun An has put together a solid year of golf with seven top 24’s since January including a T6 at the Texas Open where he gained 9.13 strokes ball-striking. He narrowly missed out on a top 10 finish here four years ago, and I like his prospects for one this week given he’s a strong ball-striker, and he really just needs to find his putting stroke as he has lost strokes putting in five straight starts. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T76 and 2019 – T13.

Doug Ghim (Salary: DraftKings – $7.4K) – The Ghim Reaper has four straight top 27’s including a T15 last week where he gained strokes across the board in Connecticut. He’s only 1/3 at this tournament but should be able to ride his momentum to another solid finish this week – not bad at all for a mid $7K price tag on DK. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – cut, 2021 – T32, and 2020 – cut.

Kevin Yu (Salary: DraftKings – $7.0K) – Yu has gained strokes ball-striking over his last nine measured starts, and has two top 7’s over his last eight starts including a T7 two starts ago at Pebble Beach. He’s one of the better ball-strikers in this field, and that makes me interested in him despite him being a rookie this week. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: none.

Callum Tarren (Salary: DraftKings – $6.9K) – He went through a dreadful nine straight missed cuts streak from mid February to late April, but has been much better recently with four made cuts over his last five starts including a T33 last week and he gained 7.21 strokes ball-striking on the star-studded field. He played quite well here last year and had his putter been a little bit better, he could have snuck inside the top 10. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T20.

David Lipsky (Salary: DraftKings – $6.8K) – Lipsky has two top 16’s over his last four starts including a T12 at the Memorial where he gained strokes across the board. He has been pretty good on approach and with his putter lately, and if he can keep the flat stick going, he could capture a top 25 finish this week. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T37.

Davis Riley (Salary: DraftKings – $7.8K) – He and his partner won the Zurich Classic in late April, then he missed four straight cut lines, had a T54 at the Memorial and a T45 last week, so there’s some life coming back into Riley’s game. He should make the cut this week and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him finish inside the top 30. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – cut.

Scott Stallings (Salary: DraftKings – $6.9K) – Stallings has been absolutely pathetic recently with seven consecutive starts earning no paychecks, but he has been quite good on this track every year including finishing top 10 last year. If he’s ever going to break out of his slump it’s going to be this week, so roll the dice on him for a stars and scrubs lineup if you’re trying to be aggressive and win a big GPP. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T10, 2021 – T25, 2020 – T39, and 2019 – T64.

JJ Spaun (Salary: DraftKings – $7.5K) – Here’s another golfer who has played weekend golf in Detroit since 2019 with a top 10 last year and finishing no worse than T32. Spaun has three top 30’s over his last six starts if you count the Zurich Classic, and could have a decent week if his putter stays hot on these greens and he keeps gaining strokes in the ball-striking category. Rocket Mortgage Classic finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T8, 2021 – T32, 2020 – T30, and 2019 – T13.
