One down, just two more to go – PGA Tour playoff events that
Patrick Reed drew first blood in the first playoff tournament that wrapped up on Sunday with scores of 66, 66, 67, and 69, and moves all the way up to 2nd in the FedEx Cup standings. This week we turn our attention to the BMW Championship in Medinah, IL where players will navigate the Medinah Country Club. Just two events are left in the 2018-2019 season, and next Sunday we will see who wins the FedEx Cup and takes home a whopping $15M – $5M more than ever before.
Medinah Country Club (Course #3) is a challenging track that measures a lengthy 7,613 yards and is a par 72. The field is down to just 70 players who have qualified to be here this week through their efforts dating back to last September. There is, of course, no cut this week so all players will play four rounds unless they withdraw. The key stats to focus on this week are Strokes Gained: Approach, Proximity Gained 175+ Yards, Par 4s Gained: 450-500 Yards, Strokes Gained: Off The Tee, and Par 5s Gained.
Let’s get this show on the road, onto my picks for this week, you can take a look at some of my very favorite players for BMW Championship – my top 10 favorite golfers to do well in the tournament and 5 value picks (in no particular order), and I include player salaries for DraftKings.
10 Players Who Are Playing For Keeps This Week
Webb Simpson (Salary: DraftKings – $9,400) – Came into last week with back to back runner up finishes, and had a very good 18th place at The Northern Trust. Has been as consistent as any player since The Masters, and seems poised to have another big week in Medinah starting on Thursday for round one. Even though last year’s BMW Championship was played on another course, Simpson had a 6th and is a proven playoff performer.
Brooks Koepka (Salary: DraftKings – $11,800) – Many golf analysts predicted Koepka to win last week but he never really found his groove and settled for a 30th place finish. Has two wins in his last 8 starts, four top 4’s in that same span, and the current FedEx Cup standings leader will want to be on his A-game this week to maintain that lofty position.
Rory McIlory (Salary: DraftKings – $11,500) – In case you didn’t already know it, McIlory is a super-elite golfer and although he finished 6th last week, he still dropped one spot in the FedEx Cup standings to fall into the 3rd spot. He has two wins this season, what seems like a top 10 every week, was 5th last year at this event, and should have a strong four rounds this week to finish high.
Justin Rose (Salary: DraftKings – $10,200) – Faded a little bit on Sunday with a 71 but still finished 10th at The Northern Trust. Has five straight top 20’s, was 2nd at the BMW Championship last year and went on to prevail and win the FedEx Cup and a cool $10M. He’s still in the mix to defend his title as he sits 12th in the standings, and a win this week or next would propel him to the top. The ball striker will show well this week.
Jon Rahm (Salary: DraftKings – $10,900) – Was highly regarded last week and didn’t disappoint by locking up a 3rd thanks to his round 1 score of 64. Has four straight top 11’s, has two wins this season, and his game is certainly strong enough to add a 3rd win this week. Wasn’t overly impressive in last season’s playoffs but his game has gone to a whole new level this year.
Billy Horschel (Salary: DraftKings – $8,300) – Had a slow start last week after beginning his tournament with a 72, but played better over the next three rounds to finish 21st. Has four top 9’s in his last eight starts, and is sitting at 39th in the FedEx Cup standings, so he will have to have a huge finish this week to get into the top 30 and play next week at The Tour Championship in Georgia.
Patrick Cantlay (Salary: DraftKings – $9,800) – Won at The Memorial in June, has six top 21st place finishes in his last seven starts, and locked up a 12th last week. Is sitting pretty to play next week as he sits 6th in the FedEx Cup standings, but will no doubt want to put himself in a position to take the trophy, and can with a top 5 finish this week.
Justin Thomas (Salary: DraftKings – $10,000) – Although he hasn’t had a top 10 finish since February, he’s been very close with an 11th, 12th, and a 12th in his last three tournaments played so he’s knocking on the door and is playing his best golf since earlier this year when he was a constant top 10 finisher. Was 12th at last year’s BMW Championship, and a similar or better finish should come this week for JT.
Patrick Reed (Salary: DraftKings – $9,600) – Nobody really pegged Reed to win last week but he had six top 30’s in a row prior to The Northern Trust and was top 10 twice during that same stretch so it really didn’t shock anyone too much. His season was average for many months but he has turned on the jets and is hungry to win his first FedEx Cup championship, and after moving up 48 spots thanks to his win – he’s very well aligned to do just that.
Adam Scott (Salary: DraftKings – $9,200) – Was cut and had a 40th in the two events leading up to last week but quickly turned his game around with a 5th at The Northern Trust to jump up 7 spots in the FedEx Cup standings to 14th. The former best player in the world is fire when he’s rolling, and should have another strong finish this week.
5 Value Pick Players That Support the High-End Players In Lineups
Corey Conners (Salary: DraftKings – $6,600) – Continues to lead the PGA Tour in greens in regulation, and is 10th tee-to-green. Is trending in the right direction with a 27th, 22nd, and a 21st came last week at The Northern Trust. If his around the green and putting game shows up this week, then the result could be a top 10 finish.
Jason Kokrak (Salary: DraftKings – $7,800) – Has a 6th and a 12th in his last two starts and is just two spots out of the top 30 in the FedEx Cup – so you know he will be wearing his game face this week in order to qualify for next week. Was 19th last year at the BMW Championship.
Joaquin Niemann (Salary: DraftKings – $7,300) – The young buck just keeps playing great and pulled down a 30th last week. Has nine top 31st’s in his last ten starts, and just squeezed into the 70th spot in the FedEx Cup standings with his 30th last week. Likely won’t get into the top 30 in order to play next week unless he has a massive finish this week, but what an incredible season for him and very bright future going forward for the 20-year-old.
Ian Poulter (Salary: DraftKings – $8,000) – Is heating up again when it matters most with an 8th and a 10th in his last two starts, and moved up 17 spots last week in the FedEx Cup standings. Will need a top 5 finish likely to move into the top 30 from his current position of 43rd, and I wouldn’t rule it out with how he’s been playing lately.
