The Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Preview for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship: This tournament has only been played since 2019 and the record is held by Brendon Todd who shot a -24 in the inaugural edition. Over the last three years, winners of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship include Lucas Herbert in 2021, Brian Gay in 2020, and Brendon Todd in 2019.

Tournament purse: The prize money for this week’s event is $6.5M, the winner collects $1.17M and also earns himself 500 FedEx Cup points.

Course and key stats: Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish, Bermuda, is only 6,828 yards in length, is a par 71, and the greens are Bermudagrass. The winning score at this tournament over the last three years ranges from -15 to -24, so expect something in this range for the winning score this week depending on wind conditions. The last two wins here were exactly -15, so a mid-teen number is likely. Some key stats to factor in this week are strokes gained: putting, driving accuracy percentage, strokes gained: around the green, driving distance, and strokes gained: approach.

The field: We have a 132-player field in place for this week, and the top 65 golfers plus ties after round 2 will move on to play rounds 3 and 4. The field is quite weak as expected but will feature Denny McCarthy, Seamus Power, Thomas Detry, and others. On a scale ranging from A to D, I rank the field strength be a D-.

Three questions that are relevant to the Butterfield Bermuda Championship this week:

  1. Which 10 players have gained the most strokes total over their last 24 rounds? Justin Lower, Thomas Detry, Will Gordon, Robby Shelton, Stephan Jaeger, Adrian Meronk, Denny McCarthy, Ben Taylor, Adam Schenk, and Cameron Percy.
  2. Which 10 players does my custom model like the most? Justin Lower, Cameron Percy, Thomas Detry, Robby Shelton, Chesson Hadley, Brice Garnett, Brian Stuard, Russell Knox, Denny McCarthy, and Will Gordon.
  3. Which 10 players gained the most strokes total at this course since 2019? Harry Higgs, Brian Gay, Alex Smalley, Scott Piercy, Russell Knox, Peter Malnati, Chad Ramey, Justin Lower, David Hearn, and Kramer Hickok.

DraftKings lineup construction strategy this week: More than half of the players in this weak field will make it through the weekend, so I would advise getting aggressive with stars and scrubs and hybrid lineups, but still focus on cut making equity, as well. Projected ownership for the players will be interesting given the mediocre field and young players who have graduated from the Korn Ferry Tour looking to make their mark on the PGA Tour.

15 Players Who Are High Value Plays This Week – Get Them Into Your DFS Lineups

Denny McCarthy (Salary: DraftKings – $10.4K) – If putting is the most important stat on this resort course, then sign me up for McCarthy who has three top 30’s here including his T4 from two years ago. He has actually lost strokes putting to the field over his last two starts, but expect the good vibes to return in Bermuda this week. On a positive note, he has collectively gained 4.26 strokes ball-striking over his last two, so that’s promising if his flat stick returns to glory this week and I expect it to. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T39, 2020 – T4, and 2019 – T15.

Thomas Detry (Salary: DraftKings – $10.5K) – Much the same as Denny above, Detry is a really solid putter also, has three top 12’s over his last five starts, and he typically gains strokes ball-striking which I like. He had a sound finish here last year in his only look at Port Royal, and I expect him to do even better this week if his ball-striking rebounds after losing 7.31 strokes at the Andalucia Masters two weeks ago. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T22.

Adrian Meronk (Salary: DraftKings – $10.3K) – Here’s yet another strong putter and he also has a rock-solid off the tee game. He won nine starts ago at the Horizon Irish Open, had a T42 at The Open Championship last season, and has six top 45’s in his last seven starts – two of them top 22’s including a T11 at the French Open. His game should play well here, we just don’t have any proof yet since he’s a rookie at this event. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: None.

Justin Lower (Salary: DraftKings – $9.9K) – I can see Lower winning this week since he has great putting and good ball-striking chops also. He has three top 20’s in his last four starts including a T4 at the Fortinet Championship where he gained 7.24 strokes with his short game, and had a nice top 20 here in 2021. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T17.

S.H. Kim (Salary: DraftKings – $9.6K) – He let me down last week at THE CJ CUP, but prior to that he had a T4 at the Shriners Children’s Open, and has four top 13’s in his last six starts if you exclude his withdrawal/9.87 strokes gained total performance at the Korn Ferry Championship. He has really good all-around stats based on the limited sample size we have on him, and he seems like a player who could make some noise this week. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: None.

Stephan Jaeger (Salary: DraftKings – $9.3K) – Jaeger has seven straight top 46’s including a 5th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and a T13 at the Wyndham Championship. He can’t seem to put together a complete tournament just yet, but when his ball-striking isn’t working then his short game is and vice versa, so the upside is there if it all clicks. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T20.

Russell Knox (Salary: DraftKings – $9.2K) – He has a really good approach and putting game which is good to see, plus he has finished no lower than T16 here in the three years this event has existed. His past two starts haven’t gone his way, but I’m still going to own some shares of Knox this week given his stat profile and excellent history here. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T12, 2020 – T16, and 2019 – T11.

Robby Shelton (Salary: DraftKings – $9.1K) – With two wins on the Korn Ferry Tour in his last thirteen starts played, and coming off a T15 at the Shriners Children’s Open, Shelton has my attention. He missed the cut here three years ago, but he’s a better player now and his stats from his last three PGA Tour events look just fine. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2019 – Cut.

Will Gordon (Salary: DraftKings – $8.6K) – Here’s another player trying to stay on the PGA Tour long term, and he’s making a good case with a KFT win six starts ago, two consecutive T5’s before that on the KFT, and he has three straight top 44’s on the PGA Tour. He had a top 35 here two years ago, and I can see him getting inside the top 20 this week. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2020 – T34.

Callum Tarren (Salary: DraftKings – $8.2K) – If you enjoy drafting boom or bust players then take a gander at Tarren as he has seven top 31’s over his last twelve starts and five of those were missed cuts. He had a 31st at this year’s U.S. Open gaining 6.69 strokes on approach, had a T6 at the John Deere Classic, and a T7 at the 3M Open. He had a disqualification here a year ago, so he should also be hungry to avenge that miscue. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – DQ.

Wyndham Championship: 15 DFS Golf Picks

Adam Schenk (Salary: DraftKings – 8.7K) – He has two consecutive top 16’s including a T12 at the Shriners Children’s Open where he gained 7.28 strokes ball-striking. Another highlight to point out – he had a 24th at the U.S. Open in June and gained strokes across the board. He should find his way into the top 20 once again this week, just as long as his putter is half-decent. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2020 – T26.

Sam Stevens (Salary: DraftKings – $7.3K) – He’s a wildcard, but had a T12 in the Korn Ferry Championship three starts ago, had a 49th at the U.S. Open, and has seven top 28’s over his last eleven starts. I wouldn’t get too aggressive with him this week, but using him in a lineup or two could work well. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: None.

Chesson Hadley (Salary: DraftKings – $7.6K) – The upside is there with Hadley but he’s risky, case in point, he has four top 10’s over his last eleven starts and four missed cuts over his last six starts. His putting and approach play is usually quite respectable, so he has my interest this week, and his top 20 here from two years ago doesn’t hurt either. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2020 – T16.

Greyson Sigg (Salary: DraftKings – $9.4K) – Sigg has been fairly consistent since early July with five top 27’s over his last ten starts including a T9 at the Sanderson Farms Championship two starts ago. He just missed out on a top 20 here last year and could get inside the number this year if his putter remains hot and he can gain a fraction of a stroke on approach. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T22.

Kevin Yu (Salary: DraftKings – $7.3K) – Yu has quietly gained more than 13 strokes ball-striking over his last three tournaments played, he just needs to find some life in his putter. He had a T19 two starts ago at the Sanderson Farms Championship gaining strokes across the board, but just 0.03 strokes putting. If his flat stick is reasonable this week, then a top 20 should be certainly possible if the attractive ball-striking holds true. Butterfield Bermuda Championship finishes over the last five years: None.
