Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 5 Pickups & Advice

Dynasty Waiver Wire

Working on our waiver wire claims each week is like a quarterback playing against a good defense. We always have to be ready for pressure from the opposition. There is rarely the “slam dunk” pickup. It is about constantly making moves and trying to think a couple moves ahead.

BYE WEEK: LIONS, DOLPHINS

Quarterback

  1. Chase Daniel
  2. Matt Moore
  3. Matt Barkley

Coming in for the injured Mitchell Trubisky, Daniel looked good against the strong Vikings defense. Daniel has strong weapons at every position and plays the Raiders in Week 5. Daniel is a priority pick-up in Superflex leagues and should be also considered a strong streaming candidate. Don’t be surprised if this job becomes Daniel’s to lose. Overall, the offense was in rhythm better with Daniel and Week 5 could be his audition to a longer role.

When entering waiver claims the hope is for us to add something of significant value to our team. While Mahomes is the straw stirring the Chiefs’ drink, I would expect any quarterback starting for Andy Reid to have strong stream-ability even if it is only for one week. Adding Moore isn’t rooting for a Mahomes injury, it is giving yourself a shot at big value at some point in the future.

Barkley should only be considered in deeper formats. With Josh Allen’s rushing upside comes the higher likelihood of injuries from week to week. Barkley does not offer upside at the position.

Running Back

  1. Ryquell Armstead
  2. Jordan Wilkins – Nyheim Hines
  3. Dexter Williams – Darrin Hall
  4. C.J. Prosise
  5. Jonathan Hilliman

After playing 97% or higher team snaps the last two weeks, the Jaguars pulled back on Leonard Fournette’s snap share and allowed Armstead to step in. This is likely only a shallow league play, but Armstead could step into a significant role if Fournette would miss any time for the Jaguars.

Mack left Sunday’s contest against the Raiders with an apparent ankle injury. The priority here would be Hines due to his PPR upside in shootout games. In a game against the Chiefs, Hines might be looking at 10+ targets in a game.

There is room open in the Packers backfield with the loss of Jamaal Williams for some period of time. Before Week 4, Aaron Jones had not broken a 60% snap share in 2019 and I don’t believe this is a fluke. If one of Williams or Hall is called up I would expect them to rotate in often

Fumble problems have a way of popping up at the worst times. Chris Carson has fumbled the football three times in four games so far this season. In Week 3, Carson was benched and Prosise’s number was called. Rashaad Penny could still come back and ruin these plans, but Prosise has the chops to stick around and be a productive member of the Seahawks backfield throughout the season.

This is a deep play, but Hilliman has a juicy profile. Jonathan Hilliman is a 210 lbs running back with great long speed and a decent receiving profile from college. After being called up, Hilliman was in on 35% of the plays.

NAMES TO CONSIDER: Dontrell Hilliard and Alex Armah

Wide Receiver

  1. Antonio Callaway
  2. Darius Slayton
  3. Dontrelle Inman

Antonio Callaway is undoubtedly a shallow play, but the ten games of five or more targets aren’t there for him in 2019. After missing the first four weeks of the season. Callaway returns to the Browns lineup. It should be noted Callaway is a big play waiting to happen and will be competing with two alpha wide receivers for targets. There is definitely room on the Browns for someone with his explosive playmaking ability.

With Saquon Barkley out of the lineup, the Giants find themselves looking for explosive plays. Slayton is the most explosive player on the Giants roster and could take the lid off of opposing defenses and not allow safeties to play so close to the line of scrimmage.

Wide receiver is a tough position to plug and play, but with Inman’s history with the team, this should have been expected. With both Mike Williams and Travis Benjamin out due to injury, Inman stepped in with a 75% snap share and leading the team in air yards (79) and market share of targets (23%). Inman will stay relevant as long as Williams and Benjamin continue to miss time.

Tight End

  1. Ricky Seals-Jones
  2. Jesse James

A pleasant surprise for the Cleveland Browns was the arrival of Ricky Seals-Jones. RSJ provides good receiving ability as a former wide receiver and allows the tight ends who are better at blocking to keep blocking. RSJ should not be considered a priority because of his low snap share, but should definitely be added to a watch list.

If you are in need of a tight end Jesse James might be a quick pickup for folks in need. T.J. Hockenson suffered a concussion in Week 4 and his status for Week 5 is unknown. James would plug right into the Lions offense and only have Logan Thomas as direct competition.
