Toronto Blue Jays reliever A.J. Cole picked up his first save of the season on Wednesday, closing the door on the Braves in the club's 4-1 win. He walked one in the outing while serving up three fly-ball outs to secure his fourth career save. It was just the second appearance of the season for the right-hander after getting called up from the alternate site last week, but he did a fine job with the club in 2020 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Cole got the nod in the ninth with Jordan Romano getting the night off after a 29-pitch outing on Tuesday and primary setup man Tyler Chatwood handling the heart of the order in a 2-1 game in the eighth. There's no need to chase Cole on the waiver wire unless another arm were to fall in the Jays depleted bullpen.
In the 11th inning of Tuesday nights game at Marlins Park, the New York Yankees sent out reliever A.J. Cole. Immediately, the decision appeared to backfire as he walked the opening batter en route to loading the bases with nobody out. The 26-year-old was in desperate need of a positive outing after having surrendered at least one run in each of his last three outings and five of his last six. After loading the bases, however, Cole induced a groundout, struck out a batter and escaped the mega-jam with a popup to third base. It was a monumental escape for Cole in a much-needed positive performance. The game remained tied and the Yankees would win in the following inning, resulting in a victory for Cole.
Coming off a heartbreaking, extra-inning loss to the Atlanta Braves, the New York Yankees looked to even things up on Tuesday night but were in trouble when A.J. Cole was summoned. The 26-year-old, who was activated from the DL after Jonathan Loaisiga was demoted on Monday, entered the game in the fifth inning after a six-run lead was sliced in half. Cole entered with the tying run at the plate and just one out, but managed to escape the jam, later tossing another inning en route to his second win with the Yankees. While he currently doesnt have late-game situation opportunities, his superb pitching and 0.61 ERA could catapult him into a more important role in the stacked Yankees bullpen.
New York Yankees relief pitcher A.J. Cole(neck) was activated from the disabled list on Tuesday. He had been out since June 21 with a neck injury. Cole holds a 0.69 ERA and a 15/6 K/BB ratio over seven games with the Yankees but has little fantasy value. He's taking Jonathan Loaisiga's spot on the active roster.
Yankees Reinstate Luis Cessa, Place A.J. Cole On Disabled List
New York Yankees pitcher Luis Cessa (oblique) has been reinstated to the team on Thursday. The pitcher had been placed on the disabled list on April 19. He completed a successful rehab assignment on June 12. In a corresponding move, the Yankees moved A.J. Cole who pitched very well in relief against the Seattle Mariners on June 19 to the 10-day DL with a neck strain. Neither Cessa nor Cole is on the fantasy radar yet, but Coles progress in particular is worth keeping an eye on for the future.
After Monday nights massive 14-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins, the New York Yankees made a move with their bullpen in mind. The club acquired right-hander A.J. Cole from the Washington Nationals after that club designated him for assignment. The Yankees immediately added him to both the 40-man roster and the 25-man roster, assuring his place with the club as soon as Tuesday. Cole is coming off a season that saw him post a 3.81 ERA in 11 games, making eight starts and three relief appearances. This season, the 26-year-old has also split time as a reliever and starter, although it seems safe to assume that the Yankees will use him as a reliever.
The Washington Nationals have designated starting pitcher A.J. Cole for assignment and purchased the contract of reliever Carlos Torres from Triple-A. Cole has struggled during his time in the major leagues, pitching to a 5-8 record with a 5.32 ERA and a 102/48 K/BB ratio. Cole is a former top prospect, meaning that teams could take a chance on him. However, for now he remains well off the fantasy radar, especially with the Nationals removing him from their 40-man roster.
Washington Nationals reliever A.J. Cole was designated for assignment on Friday. Right-hander Carlos Torres had his contract purchased from Triple-A Syracuse to take his place. Cole began the season as the team's fifth starter. But he faltered in his outings and could not be sent down because he was out of options. In his last appearance, he gave up a grand slam to Yoenis Cespedes in relief. Cole will likely find a spot on another team and it remains to be seen if he'll continue to be a starter or move to the bullpen. Torres gives the Nationals a fresh bullpen arm after a grueling series with the Mets. He'll appear at some point over the weekend in Los Angeles and isn't fantasy relevant.
Jeremy Hellickson May Start Monday In Place Of A.J. Cole
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson could make his first start for the ball club on Monday against the Mets in Queens. The team officially changed their Monday starter from A.J. Cole to TBA on Sunday. Cole had done well in his second start, going 5 1/13 innings and giving up two runs on three hits while striking out four and walking three. However, the team is in a bit of a free fall, record-wise, and Hellickson is a veteran with career 4.51 FIP and 1.252 WHIP. He was not very good when he was with the Phillies and Orioles last season, but the 2018 Nationals would gladly welcome Hellickson's 2016 numbers (3.98 FIP, 1.153 WHIP, 154 K in 189 innings) from their fifth starter. Deep league players, especially those in leagues that count wins, should take a flyer on Hellickson.
Washington Nationals starter A.J. Cole was bombarded by the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. He gave up 10 earned runs on 10 hits over 3 2/3 innings. He also struck out four batters, but walked three. The only bright spot was the home run he hit in the second inning off starter Julio Teheran. Cole is likely headed back to the minors after this disastrous outing. Jeremy Hellickson is being stretched out and the Nationals will likely give him a long look given his experience. Cole can be ignored in all formats.
