Albert Pujols Receives Second Interview for Padres Managerial Job

The San Diego Padres interviewed future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols on Tuesday for a second time for their vacant managerial position, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Pujols, who was unable to agree on a deal to become the next manager of the Los Angeles Angels this offseason, is now one of the finalists for the Padres' job, along with pitching coach Ruben Niebla and bench coach Brian Esposito. The Padres are looking for new leadership after previous manager Mike Shildt stepped down following the team's loss to the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild-card series in early October. Pujols has no managerial experience, but he will serve as the manager for the Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Albert Pujols No Longer a Managerial Candidate for Angels

Albert Pujols is no longer considered a candidate to become the Los Angeles Angels' next manager, a team source told The Athletic's Sam Blum on Monday. There was mutual interest between Pujols and the Angels, but the two sides couldn't get close on dollars or years. It's believed to be very unlikely that the two sides would find common ground. Another former Angels player, Torii Hunter, is still in consideration for the role, but he's not considered a slam-dunk candidate. The Halos are also eyeing ex-managers Brandon Hyde and Rocco Baldelli, and another former Angels player, Kurt Suzuki, is in the mix. Both Hunter and Suzuki currently work as special assistants to Angels general manager Perry Minasian. The Angels remain on the hook to pay Pujols' $7 million over the next seven years as part of the personal services contract he signed with the organization.

Albert Pujols the Front-Runner for Angels Managerial Job?

The Los Angeles Angels interviewed legendary slugger Albert Pujols for their managerial job on Thursday, Sam Blum and Katie Woo of The Athletic report. While a deal isn't imminent, the meeting went well enough that the job is considered Pujols' if he wants it. Otherwise, the Angels could pivot to another of their former players, Torii Hunter, who's now a special assistant to general manager Perry Minasian. Pujols spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals before signing a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels ahead of the 2012 campaign. While Pujols' production dropped off with the Angels, who designated him for assignment in 2021, he still finished his career with 703 home runs (good for fourth all-time). The 45-year-old has been a special assistant with the Angels since 2023. Although Pujols doesn't have any managerial experience in the majors or minors, he guided Leones Del Escogido to a Dominican Winter League championship last year. If he succeeds the departed Ron Washington as the Angels' manager, he'll be taking over a team that went 72-90 in 2025 and owns a league-worst 11-year playoff drought. Pujols was the Angels' primary first baseman during their most recent playoff season in 2014.

Albert Pujols Officially Retires Monday

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman/designated hitter Albert Pujols officially signed his retirement papers on Monday with the team, according to a source. The future Hall of Famer made the All-Star team, had an amazing second half of the season and finished his final MLB campaign by slashing a very respectable .270/.345/.550 with an .895 OPS, 24 home runs, 68 RBI, 42 runs scored and even a stolen base in 109 games. The man they call the Machine reached the 700-home run club in 2022 and will finish his illustrious career as one of the all-time greatest hitters in the game. Pujols was an 11-time All-Star, three-time National League MVP and two-time World Series champion. The 42-year-old finishes with a .296/.374/.544 slash line, 703 homers, 2,218 RBI, 1,914 runs scored and 3,384 hits in 3,080 regular season games.

Albert Pujols In The Two-Hole Against Phillies

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols is serving as the designated hitter and is batting second in Game 1 of the National League Wild-Card Series on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies and right-hander Zack Wheeler. Pujols has had a resurgent season with the Cardinals in what is expected to be his final major-league season. The 42-year-old future Hall of Famer reached the 700-homer mark late in the year and hit .270/.345/.550 with 24 home runs, 68 RBI, 42 runs scored and a stolen base in his 307 regular season at-bats. He's entering postseason play riding a five-game hitting streak in which he's gone 6-for-12 (.500) with three home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored for the Cardinals.

Albert Pujols Hits 702nd Career Home Run

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols played in his final regular season game at Busch Stadium on Sunday. The veteran slugger smacked his 702nd home run, which ties him with Babe Ruth for second on the all-time list. Possibly, Pujols adds to his total before the season is over with three games left remaining on the schedule. The 42-year-old drove in three runs before being pulled out alongside Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina in the fifth inning. The team wanted to celebrate their players even though it hurt their chances of winning the contest. Pujols will look to help the Cardinals win another ring before he rides off in the sunset.

Albert Pujols Joins 700-Homer Club With Two Bombs

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols became only the fourth player in baseball history to reach the 700-home run mark in the 11-0 blowout win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Pujols went 2-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI, two runs scored and a strikeout in the contest to make history on Friday night at Dodger Stadium. The 42-year-old future first-ballot Hall of Famer has cooled off a bit in the season's final month, but he's still excelling against left-handed pitchers and will remain a key part of the Cardinals' postseason run this year. He's hit .250 (15-for-60) with six home runs, 17 RBI and six runs scored in 20 games so far in the season's final month.

Albert Pujols Blasts Go-Ahead Homer

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols launched his 697th career home run of his career on Sunday. The 42-year-old hit a go-ahead two-run home run off right-hander Chase De Jong in the ninth inning. The future Hall of Famer has now hit a home run in back-to-back contests. He continues to close in on 700 career home runs as the season whines down. Pujols isn't much of a fantasy factor, but hopefully he'll be able to achieve this milestone.

Albert Pujols Hits Career Home Run No. 693 Monday

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman/designated hitter Albert Pujols continued his torrid August in Monday's 1-0 win over the Cubs, going 2-for-4 with a single and a solo home run. Pujols clubbed a seventh-inning Drew Smyly fastball into the left-field seats for his 14th long ball of the season and the 693rd of his career. The future Hall of Famer has hit well this season and has been on fire in August, batting .472 with seven HR and 14 RBI. Pujols has proven that he still can help the Cardinals and fantasy managers offensively and is worth a look, as he is rostered in just 23 percent of leagues.

Albert Pujols Homers Twice On Saturday

St. Louis Cardinals designated hitter Albert Pujols hit a pair of homers on Saturday to help his club rout the Diamondbacks 16-7. It was career number 691 and 692 for the future Hall Of Famer as he inches closer to the illustrious 700-HR mark. The 42-year-old went 4-for-4 on the night as he now has 13 long balls for the year to go along with a respectable .269 BA through 69 games. Pujols has been on fire with five homers in as many games over the past week, so fantasy managers may want to strike while the iron is hot with an eight-game slate upcoming for the Cardinals next week.
