Giants Designate Austin Dean For Assignment

The San Francisco Giants have reportedly designated outfielder Austin Dean for assignment on Sunday, according to MLB.com's Maria I. Guardado. Dean spent parts of the last two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, hitting .233 with a .342 on-base percentage and a home run in 38 plate appearances at the Major League level last season. He hit .213 with a .339 on-base percentage and a home run in 56 plate appearances for St. Louis' Triple-A affiliate. San Francisco's current outfield options include Jaylin Davis, Joc Pederson, Steven Duggar, Austin Slater, LaMonte Wade Jr., Mike Yastrzemskiand Darin Ruf.

Austin Dean Drives In Two Runs On Sunday

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Austin Dean had a nice game on Sunday despite his team losing 9-3 to the Milwaukee Brewers. Dean went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Dean was starting in left field and should see more playing time with Tyler O'Neill (groin) on the injured list. In a small sample, Dean is hitting .286 with a .905 OPS. He could be a decent DFS play, but likely doesn't need to be on standard fantasy league rosters right now.

Austin Dean Homers In Loss Saturday

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Austin Dean went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 9-5 loss to the Brewers on Saturday. Dean came off the bench to replace Tyler O'Neill, who had exited the game early with groin tightness. Dean picked up his first hits of the season in the loss, as he entered Saturday 0-for-7 with a walk and a run scored. If O'Neill misses an extended period of time, Dean could see more playing time while Harrison Bader remains on the injured list, but Dean's value in fantasy is very limited.

Austin Dean Starting In Right Field On Monday

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Austin Dean is drawing his first start of the season on Monday against left-hander Trevor Rogers and the Miami Marlins. He'll bat eighth in the lineup in the game. Justin Williams started in right field for each of the team's three games in their opening series against the Cincinnati Reds. The left-handed Williams is heading to the bench on Monday in favor of the right-handed Dean. The 27-year-old Dean spent his first two seasons with the Miami Marlins before joining the St. Louis Cardinals last year. He's yet to earn regular playing time over his MLB career. Over 102 career MLB games, he has slashed .222/.273/.387 with 10 home runs, 35 RBI and 34 runs.

Austin Dean Lands On 10-Day Injured List

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Austin Dean was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a strained right elbow, which stems from a throw that he made during Sundays contest. Dean has appeared in just three games with the Cardinals, drawing three walks in seven plate appearances. His absence will pave the way for Tyler ONeill to take back over left-field duties on a full-time basis when available. Dean holds DFS-only intrigue when healthy due to the plethora of St. Louis outfielders, but his absence could force him to miss the remainder of the year.

Austin Dean Has A Spot On The Opening Day Roster

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Austin Dean has earned a spot on the Opening Day roster. The former Marlin should work as a backup option at both corner outfield spots, and can fill in as a center fielder in a pinch as well. He won't have any significant fantasy value without consistent playing time, and he's hit just .223/.268/.388 in his major league career so far.

Marlins Call Up Austin Dean

The Miami Marlins recalled outfielder Austin Dean from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday and optioned outfielder Peter O'Brien to New Orleans in a corresponding move. Dean will immediately slot into right field and hit seventh on Friday against Phillies starter Jake Arrieta. Miami's No. 26 prospect hit .221/.279/.363 with four homers, 14 RBI and 22 strikeouts in his first 113 at-bats in the majors last season. In two stops in the minors in 2018 he hit a combined .345/.410/.511 with 12 long balls and 68 RBI in 109 games. While Dean has earned the call-up, he's unlikely to cure what ails for a weak Marlins offense. At least he should be better than O'Brien, who was just 3-for-27 (.111) with a homer in his nine games. Dean should be on the radar of those in NL-only leagues, as he should get everyday playing time to prove himself.
