Brendan McKay Suffers Arm Injury

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay has suffered another arm injury, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. McKay was trying to get back to the MLB, but the right-hander has a flexor/pronator strain with an accompanying UCL sprain. The plan is for McKay to take five to six weeks off from throwing, with the goal of resuming full baseball activity in three months. McKay was drafted fourth overall in 2017 and was assigned to the minor leagues to hit and pitch. McKay made his MLB debut on June 29, 2019, as a pitcher and just two days later he made his MLB debut as a hitter. However, injuries have since been a problem as he had surgery in 2021 and then had Tommy John surgery in 2022.

Brendan McKay Faces Live Hitters Tuesday

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (elbow) successfully threw live batting practice Tuesday, the first time he had pitched to hitters since August of 2022. The former fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft has endured several injuries, the latest being Tommy John surgery in September of 2022. McKay is at camp as a non-roster invitee and has a long way to get in shape to pitch in the big leagues again, but his pedigree and the way the Rays manage their pitching staff could make him worth monitoring throughout the season. He may have the opportunity to become fantasy-relevant at some point.

Rays Release Brendan McKay Monday

The Tampa Bay Rays released former first-round pick starting pitcher/potential two-way player Brendan McKay Monday, per Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. The 26-year-old lefty was the fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft. McKay made his big-league debut in 2019, pitching 49 innings with a 5.14 ERA. However, he has dealt with several arm injuries and hasn't played with the Rays since. Most recently, he had Tommy John surgery and will likely not pitch again until 2024. The Rays are interested in re-signing him to a new longer-term, minor-league contract.

Brendan McKay Needs Tommy John Surgery

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Brendan McKay (elbow) will go in for Tommy John surgery next week, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. McKay threw just one pitch in a rehab start for Triple-A Durham in late August after recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome earlier in the season. The once highly-prized prospect hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2019. McKay is likely to miss all of the 2023 season with a 2024 return to the field the most likely timeframe for his recovery.

Brendan McKay Exits Thursday's Start Early

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (shoulder) exited his start with Triple-A Durham on Thursday after throwing only one pitch. He made his first appearance of the season Thursday after being reinstated from the 60-day injured list on August 23. The 26-year-old had been recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in November and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2019. The severity of McKay's injury is unknown, and he is considered day-to-day. The southpaw will undergo an MRI on Friday and is mainly a stash in dynasty leagues. Stay tuned.

Shane Baz To Face Hitters Soon, Brendan McKay Shut Down

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow), who had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in the spring, is throwing bullpen sessions and could start facing hitters in live batting practice soon. Barring any setbacks, Baz could be ready when he's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list on June 6. On a more ominous note, left-hander Brendan McKay (shoulder), who is recovering from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, has been shut down for at least a few days due to soreness in his surgically repaired left shoulder. In other rehab news, reliever Ryan Yarbrough (groin) will make his second rehab start on Thursday for Triple-A Durham. Nick Anderson (elbow) is throwing bullpens, while Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Yonny Chirinos (elbow) are playing catch.

Brendan McKay Undergoes Thoracic Outlet Surgery

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (shoulder) underwent thoracic outlet syndrome decompression surgery Tuesday, according to an announcement from the team. Per the announcement, "McKay will focus on rehabbing as a pitcher ... with the expectation that he will resume throwing no later than early February." The fourth-overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Louisville, McKay owns a 5.14 ERA and 4.03 FIP in 49 career Major League innings. Tampa Bay's current rotation options for next season include Shane Baz, Luis Patino, Drew Rasmussen, Ryan Yarbrough, and Tommy Romero.

Brendan McKay Likely Done For Season

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (elbow) is likely done for the season after suffering a flexor strain during his rehab assignment, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. McKay had been working his way back from shoulder surgery, and had recently joined Double-A Montgomery for a rehab assignment when he suffered this latest injury. Topkin reports that he has received a PRP injection and will now be shut down for two to three weeks. McKay missed the 2020 campaign following a bout with COVID-19 followed by shoulder tightness that would require surgery. It was unlikely that he would have any fantasy value this year, and now it's all but certain of that fact.

Brendan McKay To Pitch In Florida Complex League

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Brendan McKay (shoulder), who had a setback with scar tissue in his shoulder a few weeks ago, will pitch in the Florida Complex League on Tuesday. It will be McKay's first outing since June 29. Once one of the team's top pitching prospects, McKay has not pitched in the major leagues since he was first brought up in 2019. The 25-year-old southpaw appeared in 13 games (11 starts) that year and posted a 5.14 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 56/16 K/BB in 49 innings. He's only thrown two innings in the minor leagues with the team's Rookie League affiliate, so McKay will probably need a lengthy rehab assignment before he's even an option for the Rays. McKay is a reasonable stash in dynasty/keeper leagues, but he shouldn't be counted on to make an impact in redraft leagues at this point.

Brendan McKay Dealing With Shoulder Discomfort

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Brendan McKay (shoulder) had some shoulder discomfort after his first game action last week in the Florida Complex League and went to visit with a doctor. "We think and hope that it was kind of more just kind of scar tissue adjusting a little bit. We'll probably have more on that in a couple days," manager Kevin Cash said. McKay is trying to return from labrum surgery, so this one is worth watching for those that have him stashed in dynasty/keeper leagues. Tampa's No. 3 prospect is more attractive on the mound in fantasy, but it's unclear exactly what his role will be in the long term for the Rays. McKay has shown solid command and plenty of swing-and-miss stuff to have plenty of upside at the next level, but he's unlikely to be much of an option in redraft leagues the rest of the way in 2021.
