Brett Cecil News

Cardinals Release Brett Cecil

The St. Louis Cardinals released relief pitcher Brett Cecil on Wednesday. Cecil was on the final year of a $30.5 million deal, and was reportedly working on a new sidearm delivery in Summer Camp. Apparently, the new delivery did not impress the Cardinals enough, and now Cecil is a free agent. He could catch on with a team in desperate need of lefty relief, but the Cardinals were all set there, with several lefty relievers already on the roster.

Brett Cecil Working On New Sidearm Delivery

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil is working on a new sidearm delivery in Cardinals summer camp. The veteran lefty told reporters he feels like the new angle is "definitely a good thing" for him. Cecil missed all of 2019 due to a variety of injuries and struggled mightily in 2018, posting a 6.89 ERA. The lefty has a history of success before that, though, and he and the Cardinals are hoping for a bounce-back year in his age-34 season. Cecil could be in the mix for holds if he can start getting guys out again, but his recent struggles make him one to avoid in pretty much every format.

Brett Cecil Almost Ready For Mound Work

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil (hamstring) will reportedly be ready to begin throwing off a mound within the next week or two. Cecil is recovering from a severe hamstring injury and has been progressing through his rehab slowly. His throwing program will progress as the team learns more about when the baseball season could get started, but it seems like he's on the right track and hasn't experienced any setbacks yet. Cecil will be a key part of the Cardinals bullpen, but won't provide much fantasy relevance outside of deeper holds leagues.

Brett Cecil Returning to His Rehab Next Week

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil (hamstring) will continue his rehab process next week in his recovery from a strained right hamstring. Cecil took some time off to deal with personal issues, but Cardinals President of Baseball Operation John Mozeliak said that Cecil is feeling better. The lefty pitcher sustained the injury in one of the last Grapefruit League games before all spring camps shut down. He was originally expected to miss Opening Day, but now that there's no set start date, Cecil could indeed be ready to go once the season gets going.

Brett Cecil Forced to Leave Wednesday's Game

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil was forced to leave Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the New York Mets after coming up favoring his hamstring when attempting to cover first base on a ground ball. Cecil entered spring training healthy after missing all of last season due to carpal tunnel, but the often-injured lefty may now be dealing with another extended absence. While the Cardinals have yet to give any further information, a hamstring injury this late into camp will almost surely leave Cecil unavailable until after Opening Day. Cecil was set to work in a setup role and should have some holds league value whenever he is finally able to take the field.

Brett Cecil Returns From Disabled List

St. Louis Cardinals reliever Brett Cecil (foot) is back with the team after missing three weeks with foot inflammation. Cecil has been awful this season as evidenced by his 5.70 ERA in 23 2/3 innings. Cecil has no fantasy value as he will most likely be used in very low-leverage situations. Tyler Webb was optioned back to Triple-A Memphis to make room for Cecil.

Brett Cecil to DL, Four Pitchers Recalled

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil (foot) has been placed on the disabled list on Friday. The Cards have recalled pitchersLuke Weaver, Dakota Hudson, Daniel Poncedeleon and Tyler Webb from Triple-A Memphis. Weaver, Hudson, and Poncedeleon are all worth a look in fantasy leagues, while Webb belongs on the waiver wire right now. Cecil has struggled this season and is not worth adding.

Brett Cecil Gets Roughed Up On Sunday

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil had a tough day against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Cecil came in to start the eighth inning, but he only managed to record one out. He gave up three earned runs on four hits. Cecil hasn't been as good this year, as he has a 5.70 ERA. His 8.82 K/9 from last year is down to 5.32 this year. It seems like the majority of his issues are just coming from missing his spots. He hasn't been able to strike out batters, but he has been walking them too. He has a 6.85 BB/9. That means he's getting behind in counts and missing spots, which helps the hitters be patient and wait for something they can put in play. Cecil should figure out his command, but he's not a fantasy asset until he does.

Brett Cecil Activated Off The DL

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil (shoulder) has been activated off the disabled list. The Cardinals likely wanted him to get in more than two rehab appearances. However, Tyler Lyons (back) went down, so the Cardinals decided to give Cecil an opportunity. Cecil has been out since late March due to left shoulder inflammation. He's only worth adding in leagues that value holds or someone that desperately needs bullpen help.

Brett Cecil Still "A Couple Weeks Away"

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Brett Cecil(shoulder, ankle) is still "a couple weeks away" in his return from the disabled list. Cecil was dealing with a dead arm in spring training, but an MRI showed no structural damage. He was diagnosed with inflammation in his pitching shoulder, but is also dealing with a minor ankle injury. He began throwing weighted balls recently, but it will still be a while until Cecil is ready for a minor league rehab assignment.
