The Colorado Rockies demoted relief pitcher Brooks Pounders to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room for Scott Oberg in the bullpen. Pounders has been atrocious this season, posting a 7.63 ERA in 14 appearances. He's lasted this long simply because Colorado's bullpen is so bad that Pounders has just blended in. It's not clear why Pounders keeps getting so many chances in the majors since the 7.63 ERA he's posted this year has actually been the best of his three seasons, but hopefully, Colorado will find a way to live without his living embodiment of a dumpster fire moving forward.
In a blowout loss on Saturday, Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Brooks Pounders was one of the few to escape unscathed against the rolling Arizona offense. Unfortunately, he still got plenty of attention after he hit D-Backs star Paul Goldschmidt with a pitch. Goldy murdered Rockies pitching all weekend, so many thought Pounders made the move on purpose. After the game, Pounders used his own poor performance as an excuse though, claiming, "I don't have enough time [in the Majors] to be drilling people on purpose." Considering he's carrying a 7.11 ERA with a 1.66 WHIP, that actually seems reasonable.
Colorado Rockies reliever Brooks Pounders got called in on Friday to help hold a slim 6-5 lead over the Dodgers. He instead faced four hitters, got zero out, and demolished all hope in Denver. Pounders put the first two men on with a single and a walk before giving up a three-run homer to Chris Taylor. He then left a runner on second from a double before giving way to Scott Oberg. Pounders has surrendered runs in four of his last seven appearances, and while his value is limited at best in non-holds leagues, he shouldnt be owned in those either, as he clearly does not have what it takes to get major league hitters out this season.
Angels Option Jose Alvarez, Recall Brooks Pounders
The Angels have optioned left-handed reliever Jose Alvarez to Triple-A Salt Lake and have recalled right-hander Brooks Pounders in his place. The move leaves them with no left-handed pitchers in their bullpen. Alvarez, 28, has thrown 28 innings with the Angels so far this season and has a 5.79 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 25 strikeouts and one save. His 4.78 FIP suggests he has gotten a bit unlucky, but regardless he has not pitched exceptionally well in 2017. It is interesting to see the Angels get rid of their one left-hander however. Pounders has thrown 7 1/3 innings with the Halos and has a 4.91 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. With the closing situation a wide-open one in LA right now, it is worth at least keeping an eye on someone like Pounders, who has an 11.05 K/9 in his small sample size. However, unless he is getting consistent saves (which seems extremely unlikely) he is not worth a roster spot in any format.
Angels Recall Mike Morin, Send Down Brooks Pounders
The Los Angeles Angels have recalled relief pitcher Mike Morin (neck) and sent down reliever Brooks Pounders on Tuesday. Morin has been out since April 19 with a neck injury. The 26-year-old will step into a very depleted Angels bullpen but is unlikely to find any save opportunities. He has a 6.48 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 8 1/3 innings this year and pitched to a 4.37 ERA in 55 2/3 innings in 2016 with a tidy 49:15 K:BB. If Morin finds himself pitching in the seventh and eighth innings, he could have some value in deep leagues, especially ones that count holds. With reliever Cam Bedrosian (groin) nearing a return, however, Morin is unlikely to carry much value.
