Buster Posey News
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year on Monday. Posey had one of his best seasons since winning the MVP in 2012 after he sat out for all of the 2020 season due to concerns over COVID-19. The Giants had the best record in baseball in 2021 with 107 wins, thanks in large part to Posey, who hit .304 with 18 home runs, 56 RBI and an .889 OPS. Before retiring following the World Series, Posey became the team's career playoff hits leader with 57, and he has also played the most postseason games in franchise history with 58. Back in 2019, he hit a career-low .257 with only seven home runs and a .688 OPS. On top of this award, Posey was named the NL Silver Slugger at catcher for the fifth time and was an All-Star for the seventh time in his illustrious career.
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey, a seven-time All-Star, will announce his retirement on Thursday, according to sources. The 34-year-old will walk into the sunset after a decorated 12-year career that saw him win the 2010 National League Rookie of the Year, the 2012 NL MVP, four Silver Slugger awards, one Gold Glove and an NL batting title. Posey also helped San Francisco win the World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014. After struggling at the plate in 2018 and 2019, Posey took the year off in 2020 and returned with a bang to the tune of a .304/.390/.499 slash line with 18 home runs and 56 RBI in 113 games in 2021. He was the fifth overall selection by the Giants out of Florida State in 2008, and he's expected to eventually be in the Hall of Fame. Posey will finish with a .302/.372/.460 line, 158 home runs, 729 RBI and 44.9 wins above replacement.
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a strikeout in Saturday's 9-2 NLDS Game 2 loss to the Dodgers. The veteran had a great offensive season and is hitting .500 through the first two games of the NLDS. He will continue to be an integral bat in the Giants' lineup throughout the playoffs.

The last time we saw Buster Posey was in 2019 when he played 101 times behind home plate and four times at first base. Posey then opted out of the 2020 season for health concerns. San Francisco turned to hyped prospect Joey Bart in Posey's stead, and we wondered whether that was the end of the Posey era. We now know it wasn't. Bart was pretty terrible in a small sample, Posey is back as the starting catcher set to get the lion's share of the work behind the plate, and Curt Casali was brought in to back him up. But what can we expect from Posey in those plate appearances he is granted? He hasn't been a power hitter at any point, but the last time he produced even a .150 isolated power was 2015. Posey makes solid contact, but a lot of it is on the ground. He should continue to have a good eye, though his 7.6% walk rate in '19 was a big decline from previous seasons. At this point in his career, there isn't anything from a fantasy perspective that he does well. Normally, secure playing time is enough to buoy a fantasy catcher, but Posey is likely only a one-category contributor at best, even with a starting role. That makes him not worth drafting in anything besides two-catcher leagues.
