Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Cal Quantrill will make the shift to the bullpen, according to manager Brian Snitker. Quantrill appears to be the odd man out with Chris Sale (ribs) returning from the injured list. The right-hander hasn't made this a difficult decision for the Braves as he's allowed 12 earned runs across eight innings with the team. He figures to serve as the long relief option out of the bullpen. That being said, Quantrill will probably pitch in low-leverage situations and won't offer much fantasy value out of the pen.

Quantrill, claimed from the Miami Marlins on Aug. 21, had to leave his Braves debut last Saturday with calf cramps. He threw 4 2/3 innings of three-run, five-hit ball in that game and took the loss in a 9-2 blowout against the New York Mets. The 30-year-old has gone 4-11 with a 5.51 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, and 85:35 K:BB in 114 1/3 frames this season. Quantrill has struggled mightily in two starts this year versus the Phillies, who have teed off on him for 10 runs on 11 hits and three walks (two strikeouts) over 7 1/3 innings.

Miami Marlins right-hander Cal Quantrill (hamstring) dealt with some cramping in his left hamstring during his start on Tuesday against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies, according to manager Clayton McCullough. The good news is the team doesn't expect any lingering effects, and Quantrill should be ready to make his next start next Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants. The 30-year-old allowed three earned runs on four hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out only two in four innings in a no-decision on Tuesday. He has gone 3-7 with a career-worst 5.68 ERA (4.44 FIP) and 1.47 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 19 walks in 63 1/3 innings over 14 starts in his first year with the Marlins. Even with a ballpark upgrade in Miami over Coors Field last year, Quantrill has not been very good and should be avoided for streaming purposes in his next start.

The Miami Marlins agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with free-agent right-hander Cal Quantrill on Wednesday, a source told ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. Quantrill will give the Marlins a young and durable rotation arm who has a propensity for generating ground balls and who isn't far removed from a nice stretch with the Cleveland Guardians from 2021-22, when he went 23-8 with a combined 3.16 ERA (4.10 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP while striking out 249 and walking 94 in 336 innings over 72 appearances (54 starts). The 30-year-old was cut by the Colorado Rockies in the offseason after going 8-11 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with 110 K's and a league-high 69 walks in 148 1/3 innings over 29 starts in 2024. Because of the lack of starting options in Miami, Quantrill should be part of their Opening Day rotation, giving him some appeal in NL-only fantasy formats.

The Colorado Rockies non-tendered infielder Brendan Rodgers and right-hander Cal Quantrill on Friday, making them free agents. Despite having one of his better seasons in Colorado, Rodgers will become a free agent after hitting .267/.314/.407 with 13 home runs, 54 RBI and 67 runs scored in 135 games in his sixth year with the team. If Colorado doesn't do anything to upgrade the keystone in the offseason, Aaron Schunk figures to be the top option to start at second in 2025. Quantrill, 29, won't return for a second year in Colorado after going 8-11 with an ERA just south of 5.00 and a WHIP of 1.52 in 148 1/3 innings over 29 starts. He was slightly worse on the road than at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Quantrill should latch on with another organization looking for rotation depth and he should have a spot to compete for a back-end rotation gig.

He should not be considered in DFS this afternoon as he will face the Chicago Cubs in the hitter-friendly Coors Field.

Quantrill hasn't made a start since August 27th against the Miami Marlins but his return will be welcome for a Rockies rotation that's been dealing with a litany of injuries dating back to 2023. The 29-year-old has pitched to a 4.63 ERA in his first year with the Rockies, though he's been hit significantly harder in the second half of the season (.930 OPS) compared to the first half (.753 OPS). Quantrill's return to the rotation will likely mean much more to the Rockies than it will to fantasy managers given's Quantrill's second half struggles and lack of strikeouts. With the season nearing its end, only managers in deeper leagues that are desperate for help should consider the Rockies' righty. Better options can be found on the waiver wire for those in need.

Quantrill is heading into the final year of salary arbitration this offseason and is expected to be a key part of Colorado's starting rotation, so they would like him going into the offseason on a high note. The 29-year-old was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday at Coors Field against the Baltimore Orioles. Even in deeper fantasy leagues, managers shouldn't be banking on Quantrill's return to close out 2024. Left-hander Ty Blach took Quantrill's rotation spot on Sunday and should stick around in the rotation for the time being.

Left-hander Ty Blach will make the start instead. Quantrill would have been a poor streaming option anyway against the Orioles in a hitter-friendly venue. It remains to be seen if the 29-year-old's injury is serious enough to put him on the injured list. He's mostly been inconsistent all year, especially in the second half, and currently has a 4.63 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while striking out 103 and walking a league-high 57 batters in 138 innings over 26 starts in his first year with the Rockies. Blach has been even worse in 18 outings (10 starts), yielding a 6.36 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and only striking out 34 in 63 2/3 frames. Stay away from Blach as a fantasy streamer.
