Charlie Morton to Start on Sunday, Chris Sale to be Used in Relief

Atlanta Braves right-hander Charlie Morton will now make the start in the regular-season finale on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, with left-hander Chris Sale following in relief, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. It will be the final start of his career for Morton, who has announced that he will retire following the season. The 41-year-old veteran was drafted by the Braves in the third round back in 2002, and he's spent five of his 18 MLB seasons in Atlanta. Morton spent the most years (seven) of his career with Pittsburgh, so it will be a fitting end for him this weekend. The two-time All-Star began the year with the Baltimore Orioles before joining the Detroit Tigers. Morton has struggled in his final professional season, going 9-11 with a 5.89 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, and 148:71 K:BB in 140 2/3 innings. In his prime, Morton was a back-to-back All-Star in 2018 and 2019 with the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays, and he's won two World Series titles.

Charlie Morton Won't Make a Start Over the Weekend

Atlanta Braves right-hander Charlie Morton will not make a start for the team in the final weekend of the season in what will be his last weekend before retirement, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. The Braves are going with left-hander Joey Wentz on Friday, right-hander Spencer Strider on Saturday, and lefty Chris Sale in the regular-season finale on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Morton's final career appearance will come out of the bullpen for Atlanta at some point this weekend. The 41-year-old veteran was recently released by the Detroit Tigers but quickly signed a one-year deal to return to the Braves to finish off his final professional season. Morton has struggled to a 5.89 ERA with 148 strikeouts and 71 walks in 140 2/3 innings this year with the Tigers and Baltimore Orioles, but he's had a fantastic 18-year run in the big leagues that included two All-Star appearances and two World Series rings.

Charlie Morton Signs with Braves

The Atlanta Braves have signed starting pitcher Charlie Morton to a one-year contract on Monday. Morton was recently designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers. Morton was horrible with a 7.09 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and a 47/23 K/BB ratio across nine outings with Detroit. Given the Braves place in the standings, Morton doesn't really make sense for Atlanta. This could be the Braves giving Morton one more start with the organization before he retires. The 41-year-old has spent 18 years in the league and many of them with the Braves. It's unclear if he'll make a start over the last week. Regardless, Morton won't be a fantasy option at all.

Charlie Morton Designated for Assignment

The Detroit Tigers have designated right-hander Charlie Morton for assignment and selected righty Tanner Rainey from Triple-A Toledo. Morton made what will go down as his final start for Detroit on Friday and coughed up six earned runs on five hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings in a 10-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. That continued a ghastly September for Morton, whom opposing offenses have teed off on for 17 earned runs on 17 hits in 12 frames this month. As a result, the Tigers - who are suddenly in a tight race for the AL Central with the Cleveland Guardians - have decided to move on from the 41-year-old less than two months after acquiring him from the Baltimore Orioles at the July 31 trade deadline. Morton combined for 140 2/3 innings between the two teams this season and went 9-11 with a 5.89 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP, 148 strikeouts, and 71 walks.

Charlie Morton Headed to Detroit

The Detroit Tigers are acquiring right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton from the Baltimore Orioles. After a rough start to the season, the 41-year-old has been a reliable starting pitcher over the past few months. In his first 31 2/3 innings this season, Morton posted a 9.38 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP and was even demoted to a long relief role. However, over his next 69 2/3 innings of work, Morton would post a solid 3.62 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. During this stretch, Morton struck out 73 hitters and allowed only 26 walks. However, the 41-year-old sits below the average marks in xERA and xBA, which suggests he could face some regression during the final weeks of the campaign. Fantasy managers should expect Morton to slot in as the No. 5 option in the Detroit rotation, which will likely push Troy Melton to the bullpen or back to Triple-A.

Charlie Morton has Become Attractive Trade Chip

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal writes that Baltimore Orioles veteran right-hander Charlie Morton, who is on an expiring contract, has become an attractive trade chip as the July 31 deadline nears. Morton, 41, had a 10.89 ERA after his first five starts this year, but he's turned things around and has posted a 3.05 ERA in his last 59 innings pitched since April 29. Rosenthal mentioned the Boston Red Sox, who went on a run at the end of the first half of the season, as a possibility to acquire Morton in a trade. The starting pitching market is thin, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora is familiar with Morton from the 2017 Houston Astros. Orioles left-hander Trevor Rogers has also bounced back for Baltimore, but they are unlikely to trade him because he's under club control through the 2026 campaign. Overall, Morton still sports a bloated 5.18 ERA, but he does have 88 K's in 83 1/3 innings.

Red Sox Targeting Charlie Morton?

The Boston Red Sox may be circling Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Charlie Morton as a trade-deadline target, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Fox Sports. The 41-year-old Morton's season-long numbers are unimpressive, as he's posted a 5.18 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with 88 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings (14 starts). However, Morton has turned it on of late. Across seven starts in June and July, Morton is 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 43 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings. The veteran gives up a significant amount of hard contact on the ground, which has led to an elevated .331 BABIP and will continue to impact his WHIP. However, he still racks up strikeouts and could be in line for more win chances if moved to Boston or any other contender.

Charlie Morton, Tomoyuki Sugano Expected to be Traded

Barring a dramatic winning streak after this week's All-Star break, USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale writes that the Baltimore Orioles are expected to trade right-handers Charlie Morton and Tomoyuki Sugano. Additionally, right-hander Zach Eflin (back) will immediately become trade bait for contending teams in search of pitching help when he makes his return from the injured list to open the second half of the season. Eflin has been out since late June due to back discomfort, but he could attract interest around the league if he can prove he's fully healthy when he returns before the July 31 trade deadline. The Orioles have been one of the most disappointing stories so far in 2025 and currently sit last in the American League East with a 43-52 record (11.5 games out of first) going into this week's All-Star break.

Charlie Morton Pushed Back to Friday With Elbow Tendinitis

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Charlie Morton (elbow) will have his next start pushed back to Friday in Atlanta against the Braves due to low-grade elbow tendinitis, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko. Rookie right-hander Brandon Young will make the start on Tuesday, his fourth in the big leagues, against the Texas Rangers. If the 41-year-old Morton is cleared to go by Friday, he'll be a pretty risky fantasy option despite facing off against a Braves team that has struggled to score runs in 2025. Morton does have 77 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched over his 18 outings (12 starts) this year, but he's also sporting a 5.63 ERA (4.42 FIP) and 1.57 WHIP in 72 innings pitched. The veteran hurler was better in five starts in June, though, allowing over three earned runs in an outing just once while striking out 32 and walking eight in 25 innings.

Charlie Morton Continues Good Work With 10 Strikeouts

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Charlie Morton (3-7) dominated the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, spinning five shutout innings in a 2-0 win. Morton scattered five hits and a walk while punching out 10 in this one. The 41-year-old veteran has been surprisingly decent after a brutal April, allowing more than two runs just once since May 7. He still has pretty disastrous numbers on the season, with a 6.05 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, and 67 strikeouts over 61 IP, but has at least managed to work himself back into the O's starting rotation with his solid work of late. In the right matchups, Morton could be used as a streamer, especially for those who are in need of strikeouts. He is in line to start against Tampa Bay on the road next Wednesday, which is one to avoid, even coming off this good effort.
