Chris Mazza Makes Rays Roster

After 11 seasons in professional baseball and at the age of 32, Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Chris Mazza has been informed that he's made the team's Opening Day roster. Mazza has pitched in 73 2/3 major league innings, but he's never made an Opening Day roster before now. In his 32 big-league appearances with the Rays, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox, Mazza has a 4.89 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, 61 strikeouts, 27 walks and one save. Mazza tossed 27 1/3 innings for the Rays last year and had a 4.61 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, 21 strikeouts and seven walks. He'll open the year in a low-leverage bullpen role for Tampa.

Chris Mazza Notches First Save, Optioned To Triple-A

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Mazza allowed one earned run on two hits and no walks while striking out one over three innings during Friday's 6-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. He secured his first save of the season. The 31-year-old was optioned to Triple-A Durham after the game. Mazza cruised through three innings on Friday, and his only mistake was surrendering a solo blast to Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins in the ninth inning. Overall, he owns a 4.97 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings in 2021. Mazza will head back to the minors for now but could rejoin the Rays sometime in September.

Chris Mazza Heading Back To Durham

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Chris Mazza is heading back to Durham. Mazza's most recent big-league stint didn't last long as he just got the call to report on Wednesday. The 31-year-old has a 6.60 ERA throughout eight games this season, which isn't good by any means. Nonetheless, he doesn't have any fantasy value, so it's safe for managers in all formats to drop him. The opening created room for Nelson Cruz, who was acquired from the Twins on Thursday.

Chris Mazza Placed On Injured List With Shoulder Inflammation

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Chris Mazza (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Mazza had just pitched on Friday night, allowing just one hit over three scoreless innings to close out the game against Toronto. After the game though, he complained of soreness in his shoulder, and testing found he was dealing with some inflammation. Mazza had been off to a rough start this year, posting an 8.49 ERA and a 6.1 percent strikeout rate in 11 2/3 innings. He becomes the latest in a series of injuries that has plagued Tampa Bay's bullpen.

Chris Mazza Starting Tuesday's Nightcap

Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Mazza will start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies. Mazza threw four innings of one-run ball on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays, so he will be operating on short rest. The 30-year-old owns a 6.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP through 12 innings this year. He is not a recommended option for Tuesday's slate.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Mazza is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Blue Jays in the series finale.
